how to fix Sabfoil/Moses mast screws from coming loose?

Postby addictedtofoil » Mon Jul 19, 2021 10:13 am

I just got a new HS700 and using on my 82cm mast and the front mast screw is coming loose even though I tightened it a lot. I never had this problem with the 710, not sure what is wrong.

My 91cm mast screw comes loose too but I have to check and tighten before each session.

I am using the screws and washers that came with the mast, plus lithium grease.

Any ideas to fix permanently?

Don't really fancy loosing a front wing/fuselage/rear wing while out in the water...

Had this problem in past with several foils. The trick that I heard that worked for me is basically this: Install foil. Flip board foil up on grass, then push down hard on front foil while tightening a bit more. Then push rear foil down and do same. Maybe a couple times back and forth. That did the trick for me.

With another foil when I complained to the rep (who shall remain nameless), he said he does the same thing but "tightens the crap out of the screw"...

Generally speaking I think you need to get those screws really tight, but don't rely on just the threads to do it. Also rely on the leverage from your hands pushing the foil.

Lastly, those who don't take their foils apart tighten their foil after each session (in same manner above) and then those screws don't come loose either after a session or two.

If this doesn't work, I'd venture to guess that either the screws are too short, too small, or that something else is going on.

Try Teflon plumbers tape on the screw threads.

I don't have a clue what could be. But just reading the comments came to my mind that maybe the board setup is different from your foil setup and you might need longer screws?

Hi Addictedtofoil,

This could be your issue. Do NOT use grease on the Fuselage/Mast screws. There is no need as the insert in the mast is Stainless Steel.

I have also seen with a few guys is that they do not tighten the screws enough. I really crank them down. Especially on new Masts the head is not worn in yet and will slip deeper into the fuselage recess as you tighten or put pressure. Best is to tighten down hard as you phyiscally can with the short allen key supplied, then wait a couple of minutes, then crank the screws down again. You will see that the mast will slip in another milimeter. Repeat as necessary.

Hi Gunnar,

Thanks for the advice, I will clean the grease off the Fuselage/Mast screws and push down again etc to see what happens.

After first-second session the tapered mast sits deeper/tighter in the fuselage, especially on the front side where there’s good amount of push. Once retightened it should stay well in unless you disassemble the foil every day
