Next foil after spacescate

Postby knyfe » Fri Aug 13, 2021 4:37 pm

I currently have a spacescate with a 4.6 dwarfcraft board and a 1 m mast. I really like the carvyness if it and the low stall speed for playing in the swell but the setup is heavy and also I feel a bit draggy.

What would you suggest as a next setup? I was thinking a 633 with a 1m carbon mast and a smaller pocket board? I currently try out a voraceGT with 558 on a T60 board and that’s a tad to racy for me and especially the stall speed to fast for carving up the swell.

Suggestions? Thanks G

You may consider the Apollo 60 which is the same as the 633 but in the heavier composite form. You would not need to change anything but the front wing. If you were looking to go smaller and lighter (as indicated in your post) all around then the 633 kit isn't as skate-ish but it's close. It is much lighter - so are the setups from Lift, but the boards aren't as accessible or as small.

We use the Spaceskate for lessons, then once the student is riding both directions, we move them to our 633 / t35 setups and let them go.

A pocket board and carbon foil for sure 👍

I weigh 170 and 6ft tall

Other question also would be 100 vs 90 mast. 90 fits easier in the car for sure but I am used to 100 now for more than a year.

Hey Knyfe,
I started on the same board with the original H5 wing. I loved it but the weight was a bit of a pain, I went to a second hand Lift set up with a long mast. As I got better I changed down board sizes too.
As mentioned above a carbon foil and a pocket board is the go. there are multiple options to choose from, you can get a custom board from The Carbon Co or go stock from any brand.
I've been on Slingshot gear from day one and have ridden the Dwarf Craft micro and now the Dwarf Craft 100. The Phantasm 633 is one of the best all around wings fast, stable, playful with a great stall speed. the good thing about the Phantasm is you don't need to buy different fuselages to add other wings to your setup. There are now plenty of wings available for any foil sport you can thing of. The mast is super stiff so you feel soooooo in touch with the wing you are riding.
Head to a Slingshot dealer or jump online for details.

If you can fit 101 into the vehicle and water depth allows riding 101 - get 101cm.

For 170 lbs the 679 wing will be plenty large at ~1000 sq.cm and will be your universal wing. 633 is not bad but would only do as lightwind wing and at your weight the 679 would be perfectly enough. If you ever need faster wing for Moses surf fuselage - you can try to buy Phantasm 730 wing as faster option.

Other option is to get lighter and compact Moses kite fuselage based setup and aim at couple of wings - faster freeride and a lightwind/wave one just as a TT/door pair used to work out.
At my 205 lbs I chose 730 sq.cm wing for freeride and 1200 sq.cm for lightwind. Well, plus a 600 sq.cm for “The need for speed” :)

And here are wings I enjoyed a lot too viewtopic.php?p=1145502#p1145502

Thanks for your comments. It really helps to sort out the (too many) options. I am in the Bay Area and hit the baychop with the foil.

One thing I want to add to this discussion ...fuselages are cheap and durable so I wouldn't make this decision based on the number of fuselages needed to ride various wings...
There was a time when I thought it would be great to have one fuse for both surf wings and race wings but now in 2021 we have massive surf wings (mainly for winging) and a dedicated surf fuse makes more sense...why would i want a heavier race fuse? With the current material and technology you cannot make a thin aluminium fuse that suits all wings and that's the reality. As for the car and fitting in - change the car :). I can fit in 111cm mast with all attached including board in Nissan Qashqai which is small SUV. Dont go for a mast which is shorter than 1m - you will notice it in chop for sure
