Fastest Foil Strategy?

Postby WOO Worlds » Wed Sep 15, 2021 11:04 am

To all the foilers/racers out there...what in your opinion is the best strategy to log the most distance in an hour?

In this WOO Worlds we have seen two very different approaches to the Total Distance 1 Hr. Andreas Gustafsson tried a straight line without jibes and logged in 49.6km distance in one hour. Evan Heffernan on the other hand did a bunch of tacks but was able to score a massive 52.3km in the same amount of time, placing him first for now.

What do you guys will think will be the winning strategy? what role do type of water (fresh/salt) and temperature etc. play?
and maybe even more important: what score do you guys think is possible?

Sail faster,

If Evan logged a longer distance it’s because he was riding faster as an average speed,

Also one tack for an hour will kill your legs if your trying to ride fast

So either getting your tacks/gybes super quick and 100% consistent or just sail faster with stronger legs

Yeah a single tack is unbearable for us mere humans.

Andreas is from Sweden, though. But even then he told us that he almost started crying because it was that tough. He also faced some sea weed issues, which is why he had a bunch of little jumps on his way to wiggle it off (you can see it on the GPS path if you zoom in or look in the app).

What is your prediction for what the final scores will be? Will someone go faster than 52.3km this WOO Worlds (or after)?

Cheers

Like others have said, just ride whichever direction is fastest. Wear a GPS watch and go whichever direction gives you the highest speed. Gybe every 5 minutes if your legs are tired. You'll end up with a track like Evan's.

what was the average VMG on each strategy?

VMG should answer this question, shouldn't it?

No, the contest is for distance covered, not distance made good. A circular track would count as the distance of the circumference of the circle, not 0 distance (because it starts and ends in the same place).

In my sailing days, we'd say a broad reach is the fastest tack. I'm not sure that's the case with a kite hydrofoil. In any event, I'd think the longest distance recorded will come from someone who adopts the fastest tack in both directions, with fewer turns than Evan, but more turns than Andreas........and more skill than anyone else using the same strategy.

Evan was averaging approximately 28.6kts to do the distance he did, given that it includes tacks/gybes then he is peaking faster and holding in on each leg

Beat that and you have the new number 1position

Most riders have never ridden that fast let alone for an hour, if someone beats it it will be another foil racer.

Good plan :thumb:

The Team GB sail GP sheds are just down the road from my local beach. I'm going to plant my woo on the hull next time they go out for a training session

I think a car along a mile long tidal causeway is going to be the way to get the fastest speed for an hour. That or one of those kite buggies on a beach so it looks like its in the water. Those guys get good speed but you're sitting down so the leg burn isn't so bad.
