Traveling with "fragile" volume board or get a "twintip construction" board

Postby leeuwen » Fri Sep 17, 2021 12:33 pm

I just booked my first trip abroad that I plan to kitefoil in Greece/October.
Now the question is what to do with my board.
I have a groove skate (120CM with volume/foam core) and I am slightly worried about air travel with it.
What is the experience of people who fly with foam core boards? Will the board be ok in general?
Another option would be to buy an additional no/low volume board.
I am currently able to jibe and tack so I can probably possibly get away with something small with little to no volume like 110cm tray board with "twintip construction".
The slingshot dwarfcraft 100CM also looks very appealing but I am not sure if that improves anything on the durability side of things.
Opinions/experiences?

Thx!

I wrap some closed-cell foam around the edges then put it between kites. I use that Saran Wrap on a stick type stuff to wrap it up... I've traveled with my Axis Ride and a Dwarfcraft 3'6" and they've been fine.

The twintip like foil boards are stronger for sure but I travelled with a Grooveskate and surfboards with no problems I put pool noodles around the edge a twintip underneath in the boardbag and kites on top it would take considerable efforts to damage it. But luggage handlers are always inovating in their destruction techniques.

I have flown with a Dwarfcraft 3'6" four times in a NSI golf bag. No problems so far. It's actually in the bag with a small & quite strongly built kite surfboard, which is wider & longer so the SB would take the damage if it did get mistreated.

I am currently in Greece with my Groove Skate full carbon. The flight out didn't damage the board. I wrapped the board in 2 boardbags and a towel.

I'm worried about the return flight home though

If you can in your country look for a board with a PVC (divinycell) foam core, not EPS. These boards are almost indestructible and still light. If you ding them they won’t take on water. Here in Oz a brand called Carbon Co builds these boards.

I had a fist-sized hole punched into a SS alien air 5 years ago. Now I either pack my smaller board in its original shipping box or like mentioned above put my twin tip under it and kites/neoprene above and around it.

i usually travel with a ~90cm min volume board, 92cm carbon mast and equally wide surf wings..

if you can keep lengths under 95cm or so... you can use a standard(albiet extra-large) suitcase...which fits the board, foil, harness, impact vest...and 4-5 kites (2 or 3 small peak4s. a small foil kite...and a 12m foil for lightest winds)
(i carry my helmet in my carry on baggage)

i put board on bottom and then "layer" the kites between hard stuff...with the 12m kite on top of everything.

out of dozen of trips over the years..
biggest issue is occasionally i notice new dings and nicks from when the security in USA open my luggage..but does not put everything back together correctly.
