North Sonar 1500R real world opinions pls

Postby nixmatters » Fri Oct 15, 2021 6:27 pm

Has anyone outside the people working at/with North tried their R (reflexed) wings yet? And especially the 1500R for casual kite foiling.
Would be great if you can compare it to other foils you have experience with.

I'm asking for a beginner friend, but might consider the 1850R for winging myself. Or one of the HA?

Cheers
Nix

Not sure about the 1500 but had 10mn on a North Sonar 850/85cm mast and North 130 board. I have been kite foiling since 2005 so have tried/owned a bunch of boards during that period.

There was something wrong with that foil setup I tried as there was excessive back foot pressure. There are no mast tracks on the board in order to adjust the mast position (it's simply screwed on) and even with the foot straps all the way back (I normally ride strapless) couldn't get enough front foot pressure.

Maybe the problem could be solved by shimming the back wing (some brands provide them?) or by fitting the foil on a board with adjustable tracks? Can't believe any brand would trim a foil this way on purpose.

Greetings,

I wonder where, at what point the "Patend 'Pending" is hidden. The use of foil with reflex? Good luck with this in court.

tks

Kosta

the 1500R is my favorite wing in the North Sonar range. It is really stable, but still super agile on the 60cm Fuselage. I use it a lot, especially in very turbulent conditions where high AR wings tend to be more sensitive to turbulance in the wave.

Thanks Gunnar! I did think of asking you directly, but being one of the least biased affiliated reviewers here, it's worth having your opinion public! :D

Very useful to hear that it copes better with turbulent water, as we foil often with a boat :thumb:

Few more specific questions:

Could you please compare the lift and stall speed to other wings you have tested, incl Sonar 1150 and HA1250?

Would the 1500R suit a 75-80kg beginner winger at 15-18 knots?

Any major difference in 'pumpability' of the reflexed wing against conventional wings with similar AR and size (or slightly larger)?

Thanks again!

Hi,

Ok.

The Stall/Takeoff Speed is about the same as the HA1250. The HA1250 has more Glide and Pumps better. The 1500R is more of a down the line wing.

1500R compared with 1150. The 1500 has a much lower stall speed, and is way more pitch stable. Pumpablity is slightly better on the 1500R too.

hi gunnar, I also have a question, do you find the longer fuse is quite necessary for winging vs the 60cm mast that i have been using for kiting,, or will the 60 work just fine?

As long as we all remember that They didn’t invent reflex in foil wings that would be great ;-)
