Minimizing Roll in Race Foils

Postby NYKiter » Sun Oct 24, 2021 4:07 am

Ive tried every race wing Moses has ever made except the newer SABs (but they appear to still be similar).
Ive also mixed and matched most of their stabs on them.
I love the speed - but roll stability has always been an issue riding in garbage winds.

Im using a 91 mast - has anyone ever used shorter masts on race wings like the 71 to get more roll stability out of them? Thanks

What kites are you using them with? I don’t generally find room stability to be an issue in race foils when using them as intended. Note that I am riding a mike’s lab bullet 3, not a Moses foil.

There is no issue either you are on wrong gear for the conditions or lack of skill. I use 637 with 400 stab which is the least stable but once you get used to it like anything else. There is no substitute to time on water with the gear and if you mix and match every session will end up not getting the bets out of any combo
..After spending a month with Peaks my skills on race gear worse than before ..no wonder most people stick one type of equipment

I wonder if shorter is actually the way to go for more roll stability.
It feels counter intuitive but the longer masts are actually a lot more stable in my experience.
Recently went from 91 to 101 cm and it feels more stable and less twitchy in general, certainly for pitch but I also *think* for roll.
I am guessing that the further away you are from the pivot point a single cm movement in x direction on the board will create less angular movement on the wing itself increasing stability.

Could you explain exactly what the problem is?

I know the term roll stability in technical terms, and have read on occasion some using it in this forum.

If you have a higher span foil, it will of course be more roll stable.

When is it you experience "low" roll stability, and a problem?
In tacks with low speeds almost stalled, that it turns sideways and drops, or???

I havent experienced a foil tumbling sideways myself, no matter how small or narrow, thats why I ask.

So curious as to what you guys experience, and what you dont like since you want "less" roll?

I want more "roll" (= turning actually) in mine, but this is for carving fun and waves.
Where a shorter span, shorter mast, smaller stab - improves the turning (roll?)

I am not good at tacking - is it a tack specific issue we are talking about, where the board tilts sideways?

Roll when getting hit by gusts....the ride gets all twitchy and I have to baby sit the pull of the kite (Neos by the way).
Ive had to move away from the 637 and back into the 683 just to be comfortable again (after a year of riding the 637 with 325 stab).

I ride the 637/420 with 111cm mast on strapless pocket board and find it very stable. 75kg rider. I ride in nasty gusty river and bay winds all the time. It’s much easier to tack, foot switch, and rodeo than my old aluminum freeride foil even though it has higher minimum speed.
