A bit of both? My Gong carbon foil (with a 3'6" Dwarfcraft) will usually stay on its side for about 15 - 20 seconds. This gives you a bit of time before it starts motoring downwind.

Now take in account the feeling of riding a light foil setup and the transport of it ..
No heavy sinking foils for me.. 8)

Never had a 'floater', but I wish SAB 710 fuse was lighter. Carbon version in the offing maybe?

Body dragging upwind is worse than carrying a heavy foil, so sinking is my preference.

ive riden both and definitely prefer the sinker in low or marginal winds.
my floater will track upwind away from me in certain conditions.
i dont like the wasted time due to body dragging when I fall off.
putting the board on with a floater is marginally easier.

It’s not just about weight, it is also volume.
My 679 setup is lighter (smaller but same material) then my 633.
However the 633 has slightly more volume and that just tips is from sink to float.

Answer: both is missing.
a low volume board with gong m size surf wing floats on its side for ~ 5 seconds (enough time to put your feet in). After that it will flip and aim downwind. IMHO it's great
