Lift foil 170 classic vs 150 surf v2

Postby papasmerf » Thu Oct 28, 2021 9:52 pm

hard to demo around here, i have the 170 classic and was thinking of selling it but has anyone tried the 150 surfv2 and can compare it to 170 classic. i need something a bit faster, and more glide but still good at turning. may keep the 170 for wing boarding.

Yes, I have owned and used both wings. They are both great but different. The 150 Surf v2 actually has more lift and much better glide than the 170 Classic. The 150 Surf v2 also has a longer fuselage and is more pitch stable while still being very quick to turn. The 150 Surf v2 is faster but can also be ridden at very slow stall speed. I found that I needed to move the mast position back some with the 150 Surf v2. The 150 Surf v2 is also a two piece wing and works great with the Glide 32 tail. Overall, I would say the 150 Surf v2 is a higher performance wing and a step up from the 170 Classic. Love mine.

+1 on everything mmac said about the 150 surf v2.

I also find it's got noticeably more top end and is far easier to control at high speed. I'm comparing it to a 170 Fish and a 200 Surf V1.

Agree with what most have said, but I went with a 38 tail and glad I did. The roll stability of the Surf150v2 is much less than then the 170 classic or the Surf170v1. I prefer to ride the Surf150v2 in smoother waters because of this. Fun wing, carries speed through tacks very nicely. Front foot pressure ramps up much more than those other wings. I feel the 37" Kanaha shapes board is about the smallest to use with it.

Do you find the lift foils noisy? I enjoy the 150 V2 but there is a low pitch scratchy noise compared to Moses or Ketos. I wonder if it’s the gap between the front and back wing?

On the positive I’m super impressed with the speed range and handling and I really like the rigidity of the wing fuse mast connect.

When I first received mine there was a slight hum, however I lightly sanded the trailing edges of the wings and it became silent. The connection gap does not appear to cause noise.

I just picked up a new 150 v2 Surf after spending 2 years on the 170 Classic. Yet to ride it. I loved the Classic and it took some convincing to let it go but I wanted something higher performing (tighter turns and higher speed essentially). Despite setting my mast as far forward as possible on my board, turns on the Classic we’re always drawn out. Snap turns were almost impossible unless near stall speeds.

Could anyone comment on how the 150 v2 goes overall in small/slow wind swell including its turning abilities?

Cheers

Compared to the 170 Classic, you will be amazed with the glide ability of the 150 Surf v2 on small wind swell. It will also make quicker and tighter turns. The turning ability probably depends on which tail you match with it. I am using the Glide 32 tail and find this combo turns very well.

Thanks for the response mmac. I also got the 32 tail figuring I could go to the 25 to loosen it up or the 38 for a bit more stability.
Will check back in and report after my first rides.

First ride today in 20 knots with a 5m LEI. Small wind swell. In comparison to the 170 Classic, I definitely feel the 150 v2 is a more advanced foil. I would agree it has very similar low-end and a faster top-end. I’d need to test low-end again in 10knots which was my starting strength with the 170. I would say that the stall is more sudden. I could feel a stall approaching with the 170. The 150 just drops you. Tip breaches are much more forgiving with the 150. Hardly felt them at all. The wing is much more efficient. I could get way more full turns and cutbacks in without the need to keep the kite in the power zone. The 150 pumps easier. Turns are still drawn out compared to other brands I’ve owned. I attribute this to the long fuselage length. It’s faster turning than the 170 though. Pitch stability is the same or
Similar to the 170. The centre of lift is different and I felt like I needed to move the mast back. Mast position for the 170 was at the forward track stop.
Overall, happy with the foil and looking forward to more riding.
