Kammtail / Truncated Mast Shape?

Postby StellaBlu » Wed Dec 01, 2021 11:02 pm

Would a truncated / Kammtail shape work to stiffen a mast but keep it hydrodynamic? Or do you need to connect the laminar flow at the back end to prevent ventilation?

How much of an impact on "tracking" does a mast have and how would much difference would a mast with a truncated chord feel? Would it be "looser" and surfier feeling?

Wondering out loud.

The flat back would be a good conduit for surface air to ventilate the foil and cause a crash.

The project Cedrus masts use that kind of cornering to provide stiffness, I believe, and then have a non-structural Leading and Trailing edge sections to maintain hydrodynamic shape around the structural core.

Luckily foils don't need to adhere to the UCI rulebook.
