Another tandem wing?

Postby BWD » Wed Dec 08, 2021 6:38 pm

Looks like horue have a new way of putting two front wings coming, with tandem wings instead of biplane:

Anyone seen more? Thoughts?

This increases AR reducing total span?

That’s what they say, high AR for efficiency/glide, lower span for less inertia and less load on fuse. Will the drag be low enough? Will it be fun? Pumping?
Interesting to see how it turns out.
Could be good to get low end without a >1m span…

I dont understand this???

On the picture I can only see a stab and a front wing and normal fuselage, nothing special?

Tandem wing is in aerodynamics somewhat a biplane, but wings offset so not on top of each other.

@Peter_Frank
On social media, it was captioned with
Something new is coming...
The new LIBEL will be released on 5th january 2022.
Say Hello to high AR wings and small wingspan with our new revolutionary foil dedicated to wingfoil and surfoil.
Stay tuned !
And the name of "Libel", on the pic, short for "Libellule" (French for Dragonfly), strongly infers that there's a double set of wings. How else could you have a good amount of lift with high AR and small wingspan?
The big unknown, yet to be unveiled, is the configuration of those front wings. Hence the incomplete picture that has been posted.

Libel…hummm
A question for engineers….
Why have a stabilizer wing at all?
The Quickie Q200 cannard kitplane is fast…stable…efficient.
2 wings setup can be inherently stabilized…
Why not spread the load?

Thanks bragnouff.

Horue has been quite innovative for years, just not as aggressive marketing and not always coming to production.
I like their way of thinking.

The "double decker" high AR has been seen quite some years ago (maybe also Horue?)

Biplanes are very inefficient, as they have a lot more induced drag.
Keeping hydrofoil wings narrower can minimize this, and you might get a lively (short span) wingset yes.

As for wave and fun and freestyle efficiency means very little, and handling means everything :thumb:

Regarding canards instead of a stab, yes it is an option.
Its just, those I have tried, very fun and lively but too small for todays "surf" style, or when bigger canard wings so same "size", they are not as lively as a low AR small stab normal hydrofoil.
Could be a design change can make these better, but I am quite doubtful now

I think it’s quite interesting.
To look at the original:

FEDBD017-0663-4796-AB6D-B070D67D10AA.jpeg (27.35 KiB) Viewed 10717 times
Main element of the design:
Forward sweep -horue has experience with this
Close set wings -horue also has done this, with the biplane wings
The performance advantage, if any, may be lower moment of inertia compared to both super wide span high AR foils, and conventional canard or tandems like zeeko spitfire.
For convenience, the lesser span should help in transport, handling, shallow water, etc. May even be less likely to poke rider, wing or kite in a crash?
If foils are complementary, maybe there will be a softer stall as well, compared to hi AR that is. Perhaps there is a slot effect benefit, but who knows?
Will there be some pitch stability from close set tandem wings? Will it then get by with a tiny stab?

I am very curious if it will work well, have a good feeling or a terrible one, and if it is accessible or more of a toy for caneri and other virtuosi.
Hope one makes it to this part of the world.

Always interested to see what Horue put out!

Is the spot to mount another front wing right behind the strut?
