At those windspeeds with gust I find foiling highly uncomfortable, even with a small kite one easily becomes overpowered. From 30kts+ I switch to twintip.
Rode 2.5 Ghost and it seemed to be too fast to enjoy. I found that smallest foiling kite I enjoy is 4m SST and I’ll gladly switch to 4m UFO when it’s out.
I enjoy TT in 22-35 knots and anything above is not as much fun - the chop gets bigger and more unorganized so foiling and boosting becomes a bit of a challenge to stay safe
The fun threshold tapers off when the kite gets so small fast and trim sensitive its no longer easy to get smooth power for long enough to start or recover easily.
I generally enjoy time on a 4m peak right out of the gate, where it can take me a bit to get into the groove on the 3m. The more time I spend on it the more I enjoy it. Conditions factor into it too. 4m days are usually all great, where 3m days can be a bit more variable and get down right hairy.
I love my 3m in good conditions, even more so after getting a few days on small kites, but the 4m is my fave.
I jump onto my 4 m ghost after 25knots, bolt on a big front wing then head out swell riding in the bay. I had a 3m UFO and really only used it a couple of times, I had a session on the 3 when my buddy was on his 2.5 UNO. I think once over 35knots it’s just too hard foiling strapless you end up in survival mode.
I have another buddy that has a 2.8 cloud that he loves when’s it’s over 25-30
I guess the problem with small kites is not necessarily that they are poorly designed or difficult .. just that most of us don't get enough 30kt days to get used to smaller kites ..
