Anyone who can compare F-one Mirage and IC6?

Postby andylc » Thu Apr 14, 2022 11:13 am

Looking to finally get a foil setup with F-one Pocket and either IC6 V3 or Mirage - IC6 is the obvious choice for first foil but considering the Mirage as well. I weigh 65kg. IC6 is 950cm2 but Mirage would be a choice of 800 or 1000cm2.
Experienced Kitesurfer, happy strapless - hoping to pick it up fairly quickly…
Thanks in advance!

Get IC6 its cheaper and aimed at beginners, you will likely scratch or damage it while learning unless you are loaded with cash and don't care about wasting it.

No not planning on replacing it soon - I’m still working full time so will not get loads of use. IC6 will be more durable (and cheaper) which is a factor.

Tried the IC6 and both mirage 1000 and 800.
Both Mirage wings are faster and glide better because of the thinner profile and different shape. Carving is excellent far better than IC6.
With IC6 I experienced that "hitting the wall" moment when you just can`t go any more faster, simply there is a limit. Also with IC6 you can go really slow and it won`t drop, so I guess it will be easier to learn.
But soon you will overgrow it and at that point you will feel like riding a slow bus instead of a nice car.
There is also a significant price difference, so it depends on your budget really.
I am a 60kg rider, own a mirage 800 and I use the 6m kite with it, and the reason I personally did not go for a bigger wing is that after 16-17knts bigger wing becomes harder to control for a light rider like me.

That was part of my thinking and why I considered the Mirage 800 although might be a slightly harder learning curve. Not enough difference in cost to worry about.

I can't help too much on newer version but I'm still happy with my v1 set here...

IC6 850/300 stab and Mirage 650/275 surf stab. This set was relatively cheap here in my country and I could get both wings and stabs by the same price I'd have invested in other premium foils. I usually combine front and back wings depending on the conditions but I think both wings are easy too use. IC6850 is amazing to practice gybes and foot switches since it glides very soon besides being very stable. Mirage 650 is more expensive since it's carbon pre-peg and is a little bit faster and harder to glide (as expected :D). I'm 72kg and an early intermediate foiler (can switch feet and do gybes in both direction but can't do tacks yet).

What really makes me annoyed about F1 is that they change foil patterns every year and you must buy the whole set up if you'd like to stay updated. Had I got a Moses before, I'd have spent much more at first but could change wings, fuses and masts by demand, one by one as they're compatible. Maybe it's somethin you should consider ;)

Yep except Moses have changed their entire system now and it’s very expensive and heavier than it used to be.

Unless you have a desire of going fast, go for the Mirage 1000 cm2.

None of us experienced change to a smaller wing when wind picks up.

And most use something around 1200 when average weight.

Don't think about how easy it will be, hardly any difference.

But think about what you think you wanna do when foiling.
And yes, you will have no idea now, I know, but still most have an idea whether they like speed or carving fun

Thanks - that is helpful as much more likely to want to carve and maybe try some waves. Is it still worth it over the IC6 since both are a similar area?

Yes it is worth the extra. There's not a huge difference..... but the Mirage 1000 is definitely nicer to use. Its just feels a bit smoother and less draggy. Thats not to say that the ic6 is a bad wing, in fact its one of the better all-round 'cheaper' wings out there. And the ic6 is tough as nails. I would say that if budget is not a problem for you then you should consider how it will get used. If you're going to ride somewhere that is fairly shallow/tidal or has lots of obstacles then go for the ic6. Likewise if you know that you're not very good at looking after your kit. But if you're pretty good at caring for your stuff then the Mirage will be the only foil you'll ever need or want.
