Foiling kite size 2/3kite quiver UFO/Ultra Team

Postby Dkite » Fri May 13, 2022 6:33 am

Foiling a little over a year now.
I'm considering to update my kites to more dedicated foiling kites like Slingshot UFO or the Airush Ultra Team.
I'll still ride a surfboard occasionally when the wind picks up a bit toward 20+knots.
So mostly interested in foiling from 12 to 22 knots.

I would sell my current kites, and get 2 new kites and maybe add 1 more cheap/small kite later.

My weight is 70 kg -
foil: 633-1270cm²
board: dwarfcraft 100cm
kites: wavekites 6/8 + a 9m hyperlink (too slow).
style: cruising carving swell riding (no jumps)

With the 8 wavekite I was struggling to ride 12 knots so I would like a little more lowend.

Possible options?
I was considering to get a 7/9M and keep the 6m wave kite.
Or should I stick to 6/8M as the the UFO or Ultra will have more lowend than the wave kites?
or 6/9M or is that gap too big?

Thanks!

Thanks for bringing up the topic!
I'm also thinking about exchanging my 6m and 8m SST and buying

- UFO V2 7m and 11m or
- UFO V2 8m (and keeping the 6m SST for waveriding)

I still have a Sonic3 for less than 10 kts. Therefore the 11m UFO is not really necessary. But I'm very interested in how the 11m performs.

The size of the kite has more to do with your skill and the size of the front wing than anything else.
In my case that I only foiling I can go down 1 or two kite sizes compared to my colleagues who either do not ride so much or combine it with other disciplines...
If I had to choose the combo of 2 kites I would choose 6/10 Ultra with 70 kilos I guess, but for me it is totally insufficient because I would lose comfortable sailing in 8/9 knots.... I would go to 6/8/12.... if you do not sail much could be 7/12m.... with the UFO you can reduce 1 meter ... but the Ultra is a more rounded kite.
My current weight is 88 kilos.

Ride with a heavy kite it is possible but not so easy as with a light one.

6,7 knts...14m
8,9 knts....12m
10,12 knts...9m
12,14 knts...6m
18,20 knts...5m
25 knts...4m

I am same weight and ride onda 633.I use ozone alpha 10 and 8 (below those sizes wave kites. As I have improved using the 10m less and less.I would go with your first option 9 and 7 ufo and keep the 6m wave kite. The ufo has power similar to my 1m larger single struts and even more than a wave kite (so a 7ufo and 6wave kite will be a good gap)
