Straps

Postby Floating around » Tue May 17, 2022 9:50 pm

So I have seen a few comments recently regarding straps on a foil board, mostly about keeping them lose so you don’t get stuck. But what is lose? To me a big open “loose” strap is just a good way for your foot to slip further in and really get stuck! I have heard of some people making them tight on the sides with space above. And the opposite. Personally I have them so just a little more than my toes can go in. It seems easy enough to get out of.

How do you have yours and why?

Am I doing it wrong and putting myself at unnecessary risk?

I learned to foil strapless, will try going back to that but currently enjoying the more locked in feeling.

Thanks.

As mentioned,

it is a personal choice. One shoe does not fit all.

On my strap setup for winging, the straps are fairly loose and i have no issue getting in and out of them. That said, if I wedge my feet into the front of the straps and twist my foot (which is my natural stance) it wraps the strap tighter and locks me in. This only works with straps that are flexible enough to twist a bit. A loose strap that is firm and doesn't wrap doesn't work for me.

"loose" is when you still can stick your hand in between the foot and the strap.

If you slip further in, I suggest that you get a board with better grip and/or work on your stance because that should not happen.

I have one front hook on my kite foil. I tore my Quad a few years ago from a twisting fall because my foot took too long to release.....never again for me...ditch the straps.
Be careful with setting your straps to loose. I remember a windsurfer who almost drown when his entire foot went though the strap and he was stuck upside down under water.
