Kitefoil and Crave H-L Ocean Rodeo

Postby Paskite » Thu Jun 23, 2022 11:45 am

Dear all,

I just ownned a 12m Roam Allula for very light wind....which is incredible but expensive. For higher wind I would like to know wether some of you have tested the CRAVE-H-L...I am looking for a 10m. On the OR website, their charts stipulate that it is not a Foil kite...which a bit puzzling form me since it turns fast and drift super well. I also like to jump when kitefoilng....the CRAVE is much more powerfull for that than the roam.

Any feedback will be really appreciated,

All the best

P

Maybe they don't rate it super high for foil because there are better low wind options?
Note that they still give it 7 out of 10, so it is not crap in their rating, just not the best that they offer.
I could imagine this is especially true for the sub 10 knot range and for people riding waves.

However, I had the exact same thought as you:
For higher winds and a bit more lift it sounds like a good match on paper.
So I just bought a 6m Crave HL a week ago for medium-high winds.
I only had one 1 hour session on it in super crappy conditions (off-shore on a lake) so I can't really tell much yet except that it was very stable without getting yanked around in extremely crappy gusty conditions. Off course its not a high aspect kite like a XR/Orbit/Rebel in regards to lift but I guess that is the compromise you get for it being super quick turning and able to drift.
Looping the the kite felt good without huge unpredictable power spikes but it was still on the lower end of its power range (probably 15 knots gusting to mid twenties).
I was riding strapless this session so cannot really tell much about jumping potential yet (not that I am great at jumping).

Other impressions:
* Bar pressure is very low like the Roam
* Feels like a pretty fast kite but 6m kites are usually quite fast anyway so not sure if it is really faster then a random 6m

We don't get lots of > 18 knots days in summer so might take some time before I get to ride it more.

Thanks Leeuwen for this rapid and complete reply.

I think the lift of the Crave is very good....if you have a look to vidos of their GKA rider Giel Vlugt!

I see that you have a Roam-A 10m...what settings for the back lines you use for foiling. With my 12, I felt more bar pressure and power when using knots the closest from the canopy...which sounds like normal ;). With higher winds I used the other set up and it was although very fine in terms of power and turning.

Best regards

I thought Giel pretty much only rides the Rise doing big air and not the Crave.
I don't really follow the competitions so I could be wrong.
Also I would guess these pros can jump high with any kite so not sure if thats a good indication :D

My roam 10m only has one connection point for the rear lines which is pretty much at the wing tip.
IIRC my Crave does have 2 connection point settings and it was set to the lowest connecter (it came that way) so I would guess I could increase bar pressure a bit if I cannot get used to it.

I was able to go out on another session with the 6m in the 18-25 knot range.
Just some small additions:
* depower is not as on-off as a Roam so you need to be ok handling a bit more risidual power when fully sheeting out.
* the kite feels a bit "heavier" in the air then the Roam (duh), especially if you are barreling full down wind, still good drift in more normal situation.
* lift seems better/longer then roam in the tacks but hard to judge due to different kite sizes. I would say the 6m is similar in lift "time-window" to the 10m which is an improvement due to smaller size usually providing shorter lift.
Excellent handling, rigid frame, no flutter, nice loops without being yanked of the board (riding strapless)
Still have not done any jumping.
