Why am I breaching so much on my new foil?

Postby kct » Sat Jul 02, 2022 11:31 pm

I've been prone foiling and occasionally kite foiling on a Cloud IX s24 for a few months. I am in the stage of kiting where I can get going and gybe half the time but foot switching is way beyond me.

Recently I got an Axis setup: 890 wing, 420 tail, "crazy short" fuse. It's so great for prone but when I try to kite on it I can barely ride without breaching. What's going on?

The new setup has very controlled lift when I prone, so maybe it's the fuse length? Or maybe there's just so much power when kiting that the wing behaves different

What length mast? What is breaching: wing tip or the whole thing?

The Axis 890 is a pretty big wing for kite foiling (depending on your weight) - it probably creates a lot of lift when you apply kite power. You need to learn how to control the power & balance the foil. If you're using a shorter mast & shorter fuselage this probably makes it still more challenging.

Assume you are strapless?

As if if not, it can be a bunch of trim settings.

A bigger wing and shorter or smaller stab is a lot more sensitive to everything, especially kite power.

You don't have that much experience kitefoiling, so what you encounter is pretty normal.

You have to learn control, and use very small kites.

On the other hand, your setup is what many of us love, a lively foil which can be ridden with crazy small kites.

Just keep riding, it takes time and will come eventually :D

PS: kite size wise, say you ride a TT with a 12 m2 tube or a surfboard with a 9, then you should probably use a 5 m2 on your kitefoil, just to give you an idea.

Shorter fuse makes things much more sensitive pitch wise. It'll take a wee while to get dialed on that new setup.

Try a smaller kite that will just get you up onto the foil. You have a very large foil which needs very little power and you'll find smaller kites much more fun and responsive.

Since you are having success prone foiling on the axis setup I’ll skip the obvious differences between the setups.

And say when kite foiling, the kites lift, especially when flown high as you might when learning, is a big reason you might be breaching.

And the lift is not constant as it is affected by the wind.

So I think the advice to use a smaller kite is pretty solid.

Good luck!

Try the short fuselage for kiting. I sup, prone, wing, down wind, tow in and dock start with the crazy short but kite with a short fuselage.

I had the same problem with art899 and 380.
I shimmed the back stab -2 degress, and it got perfect. Glides like nothing else.
I actually don't have a good explanation why, but it was a huge difference.

I also had to shim the mast plate, but that depends what kind of board you have.
