Wing Area/Span vs Speeds Charts

Postby daffes » Fri Jul 08, 2022 1:24 pm

I know there are a bunch of variables that will affect the performance of an Hydrofoil, yet I was hoping to get some basic guidelines or speed ranges based on the wing area. Is there any formulas that can be applied? Or does anyone have access to any charts from their manufacturers?

For example, I currently own a Cabrinha set up with a front wing:

[*] X950- 950cm^2, WS 630mm, AR 4.2, Vol 1.18L

If I go up to the next model
[*] X1300- 1300cm^2, WS 780mm, AR 4.7, Vol 1.6L

By how much should I expect this to change my performance? Data like, minimum speed to get on the foil, maximum speed before breaching? I imagine this is specially relevant for racing foils.

For context, we have a friendly local competition that people post their best time for 5km over the season, and I'm wondering how much advantage does one person have for having a wing with 35% less area than mine, given we sailed on the same conditions.

Another relevant question I wanted to answer is which speed should I ask a boat driver to set to be able to ride their wake based on my wing area.

Top speed has more to do with your skill level than exactly which foil you're on. In general, smaller foils are faster, but I Am riding the same foil as world champion racers and I can tell you we do not go the same speed.

I would add that also the section (camber and thickness) plays an important role.

It plays by far the major role yes :thumb:

Span and area and planform and washout or not are contributors to the overall lift and vortex drag.

But you need the polar for the profile, combined with above, and to understand how it all work together, to know the effect on drag and lift at different angle of attacks.

A high aspect wing same area doesn't really have less drag than a fat short wing, when going full speed, but it has a lot less drag and more lift when going upwind, but it stalls more violently.

Just an example, and IMO you can not make a usesble chart over different wings.

BUT, one could make a chart of the span and area (or AR) of all wings, to get a rough idea of the main sizing at least :D

Problem is it should be updated often, and you have to ride a wing anyways, to know how it is

Interesting charts, the Wings arround 6-800cm seem to have an envelope of arround 10mph (low to max), while the bigger ones are arround 6mph.
What I do not understand how they define max speed.
I allways thought that it is more decreasing efficency in termes of needed power for added increment of speed.
Hard to believe that the all stop getting faster or getting unridable at that point.
Did they test behind a boat?
