I know there are a bunch of variables that will affect the performance of an Hydrofoil, yet I was hoping to get some basic guidelines or speed ranges based on the wing area. Is there any formulas that can be applied? Or does anyone have access to any charts from their manufacturers?
For example, I currently own a Cabrinha set up with a front wing:
[*] X950- 950cm^2, WS 630mm, AR 4.2, Vol 1.18L
If I go up to the next model
[*] X1300- 1300cm^2, WS 780mm, AR 4.7, Vol 1.6L
By how much should I expect this to change my performance? Data like, minimum speed to get on the foil, maximum speed before breaching? I imagine this is specially relevant for racing foils.
For context, we have a friendly local competition that people post their best time for 5km over the season, and I'm wondering how much advantage does one person have for having a wing with 35% less area than mine, given we sailed on the same conditions.
Another relevant question I wanted to answer is which speed should I ask a boat driver to set to be able to ride their wake based on my wing area.
