Postby aniva » Thu May 04, 2023 5:17 pm

James at Clearwater Hydrofoils has pretty decent prices, particularly on DIY kits - https://www.clearwaterfoils.com/collect ... board-kits

Lightweight, rigid, and cheap.

Pick two.

Unless you DIY.

Many of us built foilboards from marine plywood and fiberglass in the 2015ish era, using thru-bolts to secure instead of boxes. They worked great but were heavy and a bit flexy unless thick/heavier. Cost: $100 or less plus time. I still have one or two in the shed.

A step up from that for DIY is making a foam core board and that’s when it starts getting expensive: CF instead of fiberglass, HD foam for reinforcement, track boxes, etc

But I’m still riding my 110cm long 3cm thick HD foam and CF skin foilboard with thru-bolts after 3 years and it’s still excellent- completely rigid and fairly light. $300 plus time spent.

If you’re able to go the DIY route it’s relatively cheap to build a great board for $200-300 plus time.

The kite market is in a slump right now used gear is super cheap. A lot of people who foil move to a smaller board after a few years you can probably find something really cheap. I did a lot of epoxy work on boats I can tell you epoxy, carbon fiber and SS hardware is expensive. It's always better to buy local and inspect it lots of scams online.

Naish Microchip $500 retail AUD. It's lightweight rigid and cheap. Well made, great shape, full grip with nice kick tail, tracks... perfect. Actually add some strap plugs and you would have perfection.

I don't see way to add straps to this Naish microchip board...

There’s a guy in Hood River who uses a rectangle piece of plywood.

Tried the plywood boards once
Happy with it, poliester finish to get it cheapest. 4KG 1,20 m board... Enough for me.
