Kitefoiling with Foil Drive assist

Postby Axis1050 » Sun Aug 27, 2023 9:33 am

Anyone tried the Foil Drive Assist in very light wind.
It may take a bit of thinking to set up however, I can see some benefits eg, easier to get to deep water in direct on shore breezes, possibly able to use a smaller kite and Foil plus if all goes wrong easier to get back to shore start point.
Just trying to justify for multiple foiling activities.

I don't think it would make sense... Usually my limitation (using small fast foil/big kites) in the low end is not water starting but keep foiling once on the foil.
With multiple strokes of the kite I can get on foil but after a few seconds I start to loose momentum and have to move the kite a lot to stay on the foil.
For winging is a different story, because usually the main limitation is to get on the foil in light winds.

FoilDrive have improved the signal strength a bit.

It depends on what type of kitefoiling?
The FoilDrive would fit well with this?

Even with the V2 controller I doubt you would maintain connection. Another kitefoiler at our local asked me if Foildrive and kitefoil could mix. We decided that in lighter wind if you actually managed to get up, the Foildrive would quickly outrun the kite and the kite would fall in the water. No issue with a wing as you can physically hold the wing up until apparent wind builds enough to provide drive.

But you could Foildrive upwind? So you could keep tension in the lines?
It depends a lot on conditions and equipment - and what you are trying to do.

The only stipulation so far is kitefoiling in light wind.
If that means a big ram air kite on long lines, or a hybrid kite on short lines in waves (where wave power becomes part of the mix) are different situations.

It may be possible - but it might not really be useful.

Hi Foildrivers,
Anybody know what is going on with the company?
After I paid for Foil Drive gen2 two weeks ago, they stopped respond to my emails.
Are they still alive?

I cant see the use for kitefoiling, where we have loads of power when looped, even in marginal winds

But for wingfoil it could make sense - a totally different world in this respect.

Meaning getting out and lowend.

I stay away from it, as it feels like cheating and no fun, and as I also kitefoil I can just go out with a kite if winds are 6-7 knots, instead of wingfoiling which requires 10-12 knots even with marginal wind wingfoil gear..

From my understanding they have been massively swamped with orders, probably just need to be patient...

Ordering 2 weeks ago may have missed the Batch 1 cut off, Batch 2 isn’t being shipped until late January 2024.
