Attn Peter Frank - gong help

Postby Boston kiter » Sat Dec 09, 2023 10:18 pm

I am trying to decide on a new wing for Kiting. Currently riding Lift 170 classic.
My current choices are between the New Curve, Curve H, or Fluid? these seem to be my best options for kiting. I like the lift but I am thinking a little more speed and glide may be nice.

Thanks for any responses.

Assume you are talking about the new 170 HA foil?
Area 1095 cm2 AR 8.1.

We don't use lift foils here but the classic lift is hopelessly low AR for wingfoil but works great for kitefoil.

Need a bit more information about how you like to ride?

The 170 HA should have good glide, the classic bad.

No , I currently ride the lift 170 classic, not the new 170HA, for Kiting..
I am looking to sell the lift and go with Gong( I use New Curve XL for Winging) so I will only need new front wing and stab.

My question is do I go with Curve, Curve HA, or Fluid??? for Kiting..

Gong suggested me the fluid xs for kitefoiling

XS is 650cm2 with 6.8AR while the S is 750 as you probably know, what maybe you don’t know is that the wings that in the old generation were sized M now are S so that those who buy a light wind wing or beginner’s or heavyweights wing wouldn't get an xxxxl; anyway they strongly suggested me towards the xs and they told me, only after having specifically asked them several times since the xs seemed small to me, that the S is a wing much more light wind focused and to consider it the maximum size for kitefoiling.

The curve could be an alternative option but if you pay attention when you go to the Gong website and go to the purchase advice, the kitefoil in the curve program is not mentioned even once, probably because it is already bigger and elongated than the fluid.

I am using the previous generation Curve ST and Fluid MS.
They are both very nice wings for kite foil.
Of course the Fluid has more glide and I think that I will eventually use it exclusively.
I am 75kg and like chasing the swell.

I cannot imagine that a higher aspect wing would be as fun as it lacks both stability and agility.
It appears that a high aspect ratio is not a benefit, but rather an evil you have to accept if you do not use a kite for propulsion.

I dont use Gong foils for kitefoiling, I use Ketos.

But for wingfoiling I love the CurveH.

Use the 875 cm2 (M) for overall and higher winds, being 78 kg.
And the 1068 cm2 (L) for lower winds.

Used the 702 cm2 (S) for high winds, but not really many advantages compared to the M, so my buddy who kitefoils bought it, and he is really happy with this foil.

The 702 cm2 lifts a lot more than its size, and has AR 8.4 so glides well too.
Max speed is not amazing of course, but it turns like a dream and glides fine.

This is essentially a bad question…. the answer is that you should choose ALL wings that you can get your hands on. Even those that people say are completely unsuitable for kiting - that’s false, everything works (not the same of course).

Trying many wings of different sizes and designs is the only way to see what YOU like and prefer. The worst thing that you could do is limit yourself to anyone’s say-so. Also, be patient - allow for at least a couple of sessions, sometimes it may take a while for the impressions to sink in.

I have the new fluid S and, while I like it, I'm still using the old curve M 1100 for my progression journey.

Fluid S is less stable at lower speed and I stalls at lower speed too. Maybe a XS would be more fun when my smaller kite is too much but it rarely happens for me.

Don't know if you are in jumping. Broke two Gong Frontwings this year. Veloce M lasted 5 sessions the Curve M longer. Currently ride the Curve S-T. With the M I had a Vmax of around 40 kmh. With the S-T it is 42 kmh. But mostly I am in the upper 30s.

I don't jump and most likely will only do small jumps as I get better.
I have often wondered how the wings hold up to that punishment, especially these new breed of super wide HA foils.
