Small wing foil for kite foil (sk8, armstrong, ketos...)

Postby hydroholic » Mon Feb 05, 2024 5:48 pm

Hi everyone,

Has anybody tryied a small Wing foil in kitefoil ? I talk about the smallest HA size (or Mid aspect size) of the different brand. What about the HA580 V2 from armstrong by example ? Or what about the sk8 650/550, ketos 780 karve ?

I'm looking for something that will fit perfectly an hybrid kite to go downwind, wave surfing, gliding like a wing but with the radicality of a kitefoil on flat water: acceleration, radical turn, tack, 360, high maneuverability, i ride strapless, no jump.

I hear about the 780 karve from ketos, and i already ride a ketos foil that i enjoy a lot ! Has anybody already tested that wing ?

To say it quick, i'm looking for best of both worlds for an experienced rider :P

all kind of answers are welcome ;)

My kite wing is the Axis PNG910B which is a crossover wing that I use for downwind wave surfing and love it. It's also a great wing for winging as well. Not sure how much you'd like it for flat water though. Sounds like the Axis Spitfire 840 might fit better for what you want.

Thank's for your answer, yeah i saw that wing already but i fear it's too big for my use. 840 is a bit too big for what i'm looking for ;)

AFS Silk 650 is probably worth taking a look at for your needs. Im experienced with the 850 and 1050 which are phenomenal for winging and Ive heard raves about the 650.

It's funny, as winging has evolved I'm seeing more and more overlap between equipment that works for winging as well as for kiting. I just got the SABFoil 669 Medusa Pro wing which was developed for freestyle winging, but apparently also works for kite free riding and even racing. As soon as the water here in Hood River gets warm enough and I can get a few sessions on the water, I will report back my impressions!

The improved efficiency of foils for winging is pretty incredible. The surface area used to be at least double what you would use for kiting. Now they are nearly as small. I'm loving it because kite foilers benefit from these developments as well.

I like the Cabrinha H650 front with HS180 tail chopped to about a 150. It has a very nice combination of speed and maneuverability in a mid-aspect front wing and chopped down thin high-aspect tail.

Full disclosure: 1. I work for Cabrinha. 2. Our hydrofoils are excellent.

I'm in the GoFoil ecosystem and in the over 95kg category. I assume that the hybrid is a bit similar to the Peak in terms of power delivery. I didn't really like the pairing of a Peak with the small GT750. It's obviously great in turns and feel, but it requires a bit too much power at times to get going, or to regain lift after some turns. The whole Peak paradigm was to do with as little power as possible, and as such, I like a bit bigger foil, where I can forget about the kite a bit more, and not need a second or third loop to get going. Currently the RS1000 (1000cm2, 840 span) is a good option, and also my fav one with a wing.

I'm using an Axis Spitfire 840 now and really enjoy for kiting with my Peaks. I also have Axis BSC 810 but the Spitfire is faster/more glide.

Axis foils are measured by span not area, the Spitfire 840 is 1006 sqcm, if that's too big it comes in 780 (902 sqcm) and 720 (815 sqcm).

If you want any smaller than that you have to go higher aspect like ART or ARTPRO.

One thing to be careful with for downwind wave kiting is too much speed and glide on your foil in light winds. I typically ride my PNG 910 for this and love it because it just works in all windswell conditions. I also have a ARTPRO 1201 and took it out kitefoiling just to see what it would be like in 9 knots of wind and it was terrible because of how easily your foil will out run your kite.
