fs mixer test sonic

Postby Lars Madsen » Sun Oct 25, 2015 11:38 am

Hi
I have sonic 18
Doing the mixer test my A line is more then 1 cm longer then the 3 other on both side.
B C and Z is on line.
Haw do I fix that or do it do any diferent?
Happy owner of sonic.

I think that's not too bad for a big kite like yours.

If A lines get longer (others shrink) it decreases (or distorts) the camber of airfoil and makes AoA of a kite bigger. And that is what happens when speedsystem lines shrink by rolling through the pulleys. Resulting kite becomes slow, upwind performance decreases, wingtips may fold and not revocer etc..

Wingtip problems may be due to bridle changes or kite not keeping its pressure, leaking seams.

Speedsystem is only part of the problem. Primary and secondary bridle lines alter their lenghts too and unfortunately not by a consistent way, because loadings and lengths of those lines vary so much. Tendency is shrinking, longest and less loaded lines shrink most. Worst what I have seen is 10cm shrink in longest primary lines plus 5cm shrink secondary bridle lines - so 1cm fault in speedsystem is really not much. And speedsystem of that kite was shrinked too, many cms.

I still wonder how the owner of that kite could use his kite to that point. He just said kite flies bad.

So, not only mixer test is needed if kite doesn't fly the way it used to. Measuring couple of bridle lines and checking if they are ok is reasonable.

I didn't think the Sonics were THAT different... are they?

You should be lining up A and Z, then checking C and B against them... So there's no way A by itself could be longer.

You are doing the mixer test wrong. Align AZ first at where the bridles split, then BC.

Wah almost double jinxed there kami.

Yes the sonics are the same mixer as any other fs.

mixer actually Mix , and how does it work ? Sounds interesting !!!

Is this question real as I know you are hang- and paraglider as well? I guess it is real question as paragliders typically don't have mixer but C trim and speed bar.

Mixer aka speed system in Ozone chrono v1 mixes airfoil camber on the fly with 4-2-1 relation. Pull brakelines 4cm, C shortens 2cm and B 1cm.

For pictures please refer to diablo discussion about diablo special line with 4-2-1 mixer to achieve even higher mixing ratio.

"...could someone tell me what does this mixer actually Mix , and how does it work ?"

At least it may mix many kiters heads...

I dunno where that name comes from. It's a pulleysystem, which turns and supports kite to different AoA's when kiter sheets in or out. Usually camber slightly increases when sheeting in.

These are two thirds of FS's "triple depower" system. Last third is changing projected area of a kite.

Basic setup is "all even", for easy checking. Lenghts are relative to each other - if A is 1cm too long it is same as B, C, Z are 1cm too short. It is not at all critical how long pulley system itself is.

I see joriws already answered. But I don't see it is correct to say speedsystem "mixes airfoil camber on the fly with 4-2-1 relation", since it's primary function is to change kites AoA. Changing camber is altogether different thing.

http://www.flysurfer.com/en/support/line_service/

The mixer takes your front and rear line control bar inputs and "mixes" the output across the front and rear bridle lines. Check out the flysurfer line service manual above and the attached pic from the manual. A mixer for the left side and a mixer for the right side. The mixer is the yellow lines as shown in the pic below. Different foil manufacturers have different mixer configurations.

I'll have a go at giving an explanation in three lines (no pun intended!)
A, B and C lines (to simplify) refer to leading edge, middle of the camber, and trailing edge bridle lines.
The mixer test adjusts the lengths relative to each other. Tightening B provides flatter camber, and vice-versa.
The adjustment also affects the kite's behaviour (more or less turning speed, upwind perf, stall...).

Cheers Bill
Are you in the competition again with that question? ;-)
