Yeah, looks like $10k-$11k US for a typical 3 kite quiver of R1V4. Used race gear is a deal though!

Lightly used R1v3s are half price now (~$1500).

VMGs are even cheaper (~$1000).

Hard to buy a $4000 kite knowing it will be worth $1500 next year :-?
Did you compared to VMG v1 or the new VMG v2?
I think the VMG 2,out now is even more expensive, and heaps of used race foils now on the market. Would be interesting to know which of these are suitable as a freeride option now that they can be had for a very reasonable price.
VMG 2 is actually a bit cheaper thatn VMG 1 at release.
Got to tell you, none of the race foils are suitable as freeride options, they will sell them to you telling you they are, but they wont.
Sonic Race and Sonic Race VMG 1 have to be tunned at least every 2 to 3 weeks to be kept on tip top flying conditions, the fabric will get torn and at some point they will desintegrate.
R1 V3 have a little bit more durable fabric, but the bridles will snap on you.
If you want a freeride kite taht will last, spend a little bit more and get yourself a new Sonic 3, or a soul, as those kites are catered for mortals and will last much longer than race gear, specially if it is used race gear.

This is good advice...I have owned sonic race 9m and other free ride friends VMG and race.....all disasters after the first few sessions. Wrong tools for free ride, low durability, frequent tuning required, small market and low price for resale.

I've actually found the VMG1 to be less sensitive to tuning that the R1V2.

I agree, not for freeride though.

I’m really curious how much the VMG2 is going to need tuning wise with such a reduced bridle.
