Plus I've never had a foil kite get its TE swamped and refuse to relaunch.
I have had both unrelaunchable Tube and Foil kites in waves. There is less chance of a foil kite becoming unrelaunchable but its more of a pain in the rear. Then you have the single skin trend. I have had more stupid swims in the last 2 months than in years of kiting. But its so fun I feel compelled to go out again.

The author of this article concludes that “soft kites have an approximate market share of 4%",meaning that with 96% of kites sold being tube kites" so yes looks to be a “niche” market.
Tube kites dominate at my local beach so i guess the 4% could well be right.

However, the likes of Flysurfer and Ozone for example continue to develop and produce foil kites as does Gin Kites, Peter Lynn kiteboarding and Concept Air to name a few.
For stunning views!

Good info from

For me personally, I have flown both tube and foil kites and prefer foil kites.

Thanks for posting this. There you go, he just described why foils blow doors on LEI's for drift in strapless wave ridding also.

Toby: I agree, foils suck once you miss that first chance of relaunch. It's 45 minutes of beach hell after you release. But in true wave size 3 meter and up, you only get one chance at relaunch with either foil or LEI so I feel like it's a non issue.

As always, pro and cons with whatever you choose.

So, if one feels fine with taking a foil in waves, go for it.
Never mind other opinions and find what works best for you. You can’t go wrong with that.

Been riding foils exclusively since 2011 right after I learned on a LEI and haven't been back. I think it's taken so long due to expenses, bad info( example PMU), and honestly up until the Chrono/Sonic gen of kite, kinda boring performance. I have always traveled which is why I stuck with my foils through out the years and now these new ones just keep getting better and better.

I have to agree with Stef...in waves with a lei - so easy to get a load of water behind your leading edge and then you have a swim in. - The amount of times I've reversed launched my flysurfers out of a closing wave..... Kites such as the Pulse 2 were a very good wave Kite....drifted well and relaunched on a dime... I remember TwoMuchWind who was a mod on foilzone used to swear by them for wave riding.

For wave kiting LEI is better, For surf kiting Foil is better. Think on that one lol.

Personally I prefer to surf so easy to choose foil among other things like if I had to pump I would probably not kite. I really find pumping that shit.

The advantage Foils have over LEI are durability, setup, pack size, weight, no bladder, longevity, adjustability, light wind, L/D, slack line, price on 2 metrics cheapest outright (Pansh) and cheapest by use because they last so fucking long.

Relaunch is debatable but you can definitely relaunch a foil quicker.

The disadvantages of a foil kite over LEI are tangles, twists, kite bridles needing adjustment, complexity, less stable, harder to fly, slower to turn, less responsive, small sizes get damaged easy crashing in high wind (though there are possible solutions around for that)

I have surely missed somethings but that's enough.

I recommend trying a Pansh kite, like A15 or Aurora 2 or Genesis 2019

Yes have been and for a very long time and in very big waves.
Flyfish wrote:It's 45 minutes of beach hell after you release
Maybe if you are new, but otherwise no. I have released kites, recovered them on water and relaunched them. But it is possible for things to go very tangled with foils it is also possible to shred an LEI into 50+ pieces.
Flyfish wrote: But in true wave size 3 meter and up, you only get one chance at relaunch with either foil
No and 3m is small. Yes you said up but I have relaunched after the kite was hit by 5-8 meter many times, yes it gets water in it. I usually release the whole kite now with such waves so not going to be expanding my relaunch experience there.

We appreciate effort here. A star stamp for you :-P.
Kamikuza wrote: ... it was particularly amusing that after years of people mocking me and my foil kites, when the pros finally switched to them suddenly everyone here got them.
lame fuckers lol. Kami you are trend setting, on foils before them and back to LEI before them. They will come back I know now because you , 20 - 30 years however long it takes LEI will become relevant again damn it. Where is PMU? I demand he work harder and fail less.

I ride waves, use the kites to get me started, but thanks for the info. Sorry Stef you cool.

What!? Lies! Never. PMU is the most trusted sauce on kiteforum.
