Flysurfer Soul 12 difficult to handle at the top end

Postby direnc » Mon Jun 03, 2019 12:59 pm

Hi,

I have a 12m Flysurfer Soul. Before I got it, I saw a guy on one while I was on a 9m LEI, some other guy on a 7m Hyperlink. He was doing big airs and never seemed to be overpowered. I also read many reviews claiming it has a very good top end.

The problem is, I am getting quickly overpowered once it gets over 20 knots. At 23 knots I pull the depower strap all the way in, let the bar go, edge the board hard, and still keep going without slowing down at all. My front and back lines are equal. The mixer is at B -1, C 0.

Anything I can do to improve the depower, and the top end? Should I mess with the PMAs ? Is the top end of this kite overrated, or something wrong with my setup?

Yes. Change how you ride :D
The what now?
No, and probably not.

My trick was to keep the kite at the edge of the window, ride upwind with as little speed and load on the kite as possible, then when you're ready: sheet in bear off build speed load up and send it Jerry.

Edging up hard against the kite and trying to fight it like that never seemed to work with the foil kites. And when you get out of control fast, better to jump and bleed speed that way...

I'm no expert though.

It has a good top-end.. but what was the weight of the guy you saw boosting the 12 when you were on a 9m LEI? and what is your weight?
Don't forget it has the power potential of a 15m LEI.

I am 80kg, and the other guy seemed to be about the same weight.

I am really afraid to jump when I am out of control.

Remember that on a foil kite, the rear lines are your "brake lines". So when you pull the de-power strap all the way in and let the bar go, you are effectively "letting off the brakes", depending on how your lines are adjusted. I don't know the Soul well, but if it were me, I'd try easing out the de-power strap and keeping the bar close in an effort to find that sweet spot that won't overpower. Also, try to keep the kite low so it won't lift you off of your edge.

what size/line length on the bar?

i get overpowered quickly by it on a foil... but on a (134x41) twintip board it handles mid 20 knots no problem
(usually on 25 or 27m lines)

imo, a 12m soul in 23 kts of wind wants to boost...
maybe rig a smaller(?) kite if you dont want all that power available (for jumping).

It sounds like you need more experience. The top end of these Souls are excellent. I’m a little under your weight and I’ve taken my 15m out in higher winds than that. What bar are you using and how much throw do you have to sheet?

Don’t mess with the PMAs! The kites not overrated, it’s just you. I’m taking it you are new to foil kites. Get a little more experience, perhaps adjust your bar for more throw and you’ll eventually get it.

THis is counter-intuitive, but try shortening steering lines to the point when you start stalling the kite with bar all way in.
Seems like a good way to stop that apparent wind monster truck speeding out of control after the jump.. Just had to be timed precisely..
If you pull too early it will drop you like a rock... You can also try different bars with more depower throw if going stupid powered is your thing..
I have 15 soul and in 20kts it becomes a real fitness exercise :-).. but the hangtime is insane

Don't know if you're using the Ozone bar, but that one seems to me to not have nearly enough throw or trim. I replaced the QR on a Best RP bar this weekend with the Ozone Megatron II, quickly realized the depower rope that came with it was waaaaaay too short for any of my foils and made my own adjusted for my arm length and extra trim length. My other bars are Flysurfer and Peter Lynn, which are great for max sheeting and trimming.
I'm about the same size as Dennis, and take my 15m Speed + TT out in low teens to low 20's - Kami's old kite - everyone's here!

sick!! I love reading reports about how much power this kite has. Uh yeah and good luck on solving it I guess, but I want a soul even more now.
