Chrono V3 Ultralight 13m or 15m?

Postby dave1986 » Fri Aug 16, 2019 7:24 am

After much deliberation/ research between the Hyperlink V2 and Chrono V3 I think I'm sold on the Chrono V3 Ultralight.

I just need to decide whether I choose a 13m or 15m. I weigh around 85kg (187lb) and I plan on using the kite with my Moses 633/ Groove Skate L hydrofoil in light winds.

Would the 15m offer me significantly better low-end compared with the 13m for my weight? And at what wind speeds will things start to become uncomfortable for freeride hydrofoil? My main concern about the 15m is it's turning speed (or lack of).

Opinions please! 8)

I just tried the Moses 633 with my Soul 10 and I was able to get on foil in 6 knots with a kiteloop. Maybe a bit less wind with some pumping but that is a different story. I am 90 kg. You definitely dont need bigger than 13m. This is not even a question. The question would be between the 11 and 13 :) I would go for the 11. The turning speed of the kite makes kiting so much fun and even with the 11 you will be able to start in 6-7 knots and lower than that it is just strugleing.

Good question, but you know mine and Steve's answer, the 15 ultra light V3 Chromo is a gem, however you will love the 13mtr as well,
In the very light winds not being powered up lessens the fun, that's why My 15 has been my most used kite over the last 2 months, and the one I have learnt to boost with first as the lighter winds are much less scary to use for the first jumps, and the 15mtr boosts to heights that are silly high for such little wind.
This photo below is of Steve boosting today in France, on his 15mtr V3 Chromo ultralight, groove skate and 633 wing set. Silly light wind as you can see, he said he had so much float and height he had time to take this photo under the board in mid flight,
Hi tide was early morning so the daylight is just waking up.

Watch this vid of the 13 and 15mtr V3 Chromo ultralights,
The two 15mtr kites are the blue ones, and the 13mtr is the orange one, wind is 6-8 knots

Ok, it sounds like 13m will be good. And even if I do miss out on a couple of MPH low-end compared with the 15m it'll be more fun to fly.

I might eventually buy a single strut 9m or 10m inflatable to use with the hydrofoil when the wind pick up above 10knots.

o dear,
Entering the dark world of hyperlight foil kites.
guess what just got delivered 3 hours ago?
Pauline heard me talking about how much i wanted to get a small foil kite for next year.
a small box arrived today, I thought pauline had bought me an Ozone T shirt, but why was it in a little box?
shocked to find it was a 5mtr Ozone Hyperlink V1 ultra light,
Perfect for the stiff 19 -22knt winds tomorrow on my short lines :D

Excellent! That's a nice surprise and not even birthday or Christmas!

What can I expect as a comfortable top-end wind speed for a 13m Chrono with the 633 wing?

On 23mtr lines you can enjoy surprisingly stiff winds, then if your lifting to high in the gusts and needing to go upwind more to slow down or pulling in to maximum depower then change the front wing to the 683 which is worth around a meter less kite,
or for a big reduction in power then shorter lines work very well on foil kites, I am still experimenting with 16mtr as my short line length, amazing feel, kites move around so much more quickly, it takes very little time to adjust to the feeling, almost instantly for me, power surge through the window is reduced to a much lower level, so really worth experimenting.
if this is not enough then I jump straight down to my 9mtr V3 chrono ultralight, on short lines, and either the fast feeling 683 or my friendly 633 if its wavy.
If i was to guess the wind speeds I could be way out, I give in trying to guess.
using these big chrono v3 ultra lights make you disbelieve the wind strengths when some one on the beach holds one up and shouts
"6mph, rubbish never get going in that"
we do, and we don't believe it either.
top end is maybe 2-3 mph more on the 13mtr over the 15mtr.(Guess of course)

I tried Soul on 10 and 18,
and my question is how much lower can you go with 18?
What do you think?

I have now 11 R1V2 and 21 and maybe 2knots difference in low end? Maybe with longer lines on 11 less?

tnx,
Aleš

I see you may be thinking of for use on a hydrofoil board?
this may not be a great Idea,
I was offered a demo on lake Como whilst there on holiday of all the range 8/10/12/15.18.21mtr.
the wind was very light and I watched with great interest for a day at the bigger kites being used and the speed of turning and the gear people had who were using the kites over 15mtr no one on a foil board used the sizes above a 12, mostly all souls used on foil boards were 12s a few 10s and some very light ladies and kids on 8mtr, the 18 and 21 were on doors, and a board I have only seen before in adverts, that was a big door type board with a small dagger board, on the heel side of the board, which was very successful and even managed to go upwind a little, unlike the standard Ttips, but I would not bother even trying the monster souls as they were just park and ride kites, turning them looked so slow,
18 and 21mtr souls for hydrofoils?
unnecessary Is the word I would use.
Here is the local rep guy I met on Lake Como, great Soul ambassador.
