18 and 21mtr souls for hydrofoils?
unnecessary Is the word I would use.
It is true that you gain little lower end with kites above 15mtr, unnecessary on lakes like Lake Como. However, on other lakes it does make a huge difference if you can kite in 4, 5 or 6 knots. 18 mtr, and for very heavy guys even the 21 mtr make sense for foil.

yes I agree, for a few maybe, as I did have a look at the foiling scene at Saint Moritz, Silvaplana lake, what a fantastic place, and for hydrofoiling it can be fabulous on the right days, that place has the largest number of windsurfer foils I have ever seen, fascinating.

I decided to go for the 13m Ultralight in the end. Thanks for all the advice :thumb:

What a kite!
you will love it,
flying mine tomorrow I hope, or the 9mtr chrono, as the drop down size, 9 seems to be about right,
wind is light, sun is out again.

tip!(for the 13mtr.
if wind is very light, pull in a fair bit of de-power before launch, it helps the wing tips fill out, once full and stable, power back up. :thumb:

I only got that tip recently, and it works a treat.

Hmm I didn't opt for the Ultralights as I felt they might've been a bit thin in build for my 130kg frame.

My quiver is 13,15,18m Chrono3, 11m Hyperlink v2.

After a few hours on the hyperlink I've decided if the Chrono v4 is released with an UL option I'll be swapping for them. I feel they may just hit the market akin to the Hyperlink V2 however, light material only.

My wind range is

11 Hyperlink 23-35/ish knots
13 Chrono3 18-25
15 Chrono3 15-22
18 Chrono3 11-18

Also depends how fit I feel :)
Oh, I'm also mainly on an Ozone Torque 136/42 and various CARVED and Flysurfer boards.

With those wind ranges (on a twin tip) it sounds like you're never really reaching the very light winds (under 8 knots) where the Ultralight kites offer the biggest benefits. However, from reading the reviews I understand that the Ultralight kites are marginally faster turning too... is that the reason you would consider upgrading to Ultralight versions?

Also I would imagine that you could reduce all of those wind speed ranges by at least 5knots if you were using a large hydrofoil such as the Moses 633 or 790. Which would certainly benefit from having Ultralight kites.

blimey, that shows the range gap from Hydrofoils to Ttips.
I tried to use my 5mtr hyperlink V1 UL in stiff 25-30 knts of wind a few days ago in good smooth waves at UK wave spot Rhosneigr,
I was getting just too much lift, the thought of looping my kite into a turn filled me with dread! even on my 683s which made things even more sketchy, being more twitchy and faster,
gave in and swapped to my 633 and 6mtr ozone reo,
best session ever for me, that was the due to the utterly brilliant size and wave shapes with big glassy super fast sections between non breaking crests.
I guess this is where the guys who have micro size foils win on foil kite choice, the difference between my 5 mtr hyperlink and my 6 reo in those conditions was
night and day.
same wave conditions today with slightly lighter winds,
may use my shorter lines on the 5mtr hyperlink today.
so glad I have held onto my small reo kites, can't afford anymore foil kites this year.
I did drop my Hyperlink due to spinning body catapults the other day, and even though the kite rolled into itself and looked bad, it sorted itself out and almost launched itself, amazing! :thumb:

I guess the foil kites have the biggest advantage over LEIs for hydrofoiling in the lightest of winds... then the advantages become less noticeable in the smaller sizes.

Question - It sounds like the 5m HL is more powerful than your 6m Reo (perhaps more like a 7m Reo in power?). Was the 6m Reo more fun to ride that day due to it being the correct amount of power (as opposed to being over-powered on the 5m HL)?
Or was it less about the amount of power, and more that the Reo provided better flying and power delivery characteristics than the HL in on the particular conditions you had that day?
