Flysufer Sonic-FR - Sonic2 - Sonic Race - Sonic Race VMG - Sonic3

Postby grigorib » Thu Feb 27, 2020 3:04 pm

I think I got out of touch with Flysurfer race kites line. I felt a subtle impression that shorter product cycle of Sonic line was caused by competition with emerging Ozone R1 line which was also updated frequently.

Can someone briefly sum up what were major design differences and target audience (if different for some of them) of Sonic line as it has been changing from Sonic-FR to Sonic2 to Sonic Race to Sonic Race VMG to Sonic3?

Ok here's my attempt:

The Sonic FR, 2, 3 are more freerace/airstyle kites while the Sonic Race, VMG are more pure racing machines.

Sonic FR -> Sonic 2. Was basically a fabric upgrade. Greatly improved the light wind abilities of the kite since the FR's fabric was pretty heavy. I think it was maybe a year(or less) between the upgrades which pissed off/burnt the people who just bought the FR(myself included). Flysurfer promised at least a 2 year cycle after that.

Sonic 2 -> Sonic 3. Different design and again upgraded fabric. I haven't gotten to personally put a session under my 3 yet but handling characteristics have definitely improved. Apparently the Sonic3 comes more from the VMG technology. Was like 3 1/2 years between generations.

Sonic Race was built as a pure racing machine. Rules required all race kites must be production models.

Sonic Race -> VMG. Lighter fabric and a reduced bridle (only three levels on VMG compared to 4 on Race).

So there's a big difference IMO between the FR/2/3 and the Race/VMG. Why I was kinda surprised they dropped the Speed name and used 3 instead. Especially since it seems to be a whole new kite.

Also in my opinion 3 kites/3 names would have been easier for the final user who is approaching the FS range. Soul for easy freeride, Speed for more advanced and performance freeride, Sonic for race. Now there are Sonic and Sonic Race VMG. Can't be wrong with a kite named "Race" but the same name for the Sonic can be misleading imo, seems it's a boiled down version.

Well we used to have Psycho4 and Speed3, then both got merged into Speed4 8/10m and further into Speed4 Lotus, Speed5. I see Soul as logical continuation of Speed series and it was a bit confusing to understand split of race line.
I can attest though the Sonic-FR I demoed was a kite handling lightwind amazingly well, even being non-racer.

That's actually a genius idea...like describe the mode of kiting in the name of the product. You sir/ma'am know a thing or two about branding ;-)

^^ this is what I honestly expected too especially since the Speed line has been their baby for a long time and Armin has stated that we were not discontinuing the Speeds.

The Soul really isn’t the next gen Speed. Characteristics don’t match(heavier bar pressure, style of riding, turning, etc). It really is the successor of the Psycho line as I’ve stated before.

Soul, Speed, and Sonic would have made more sense but who knows, maybe there is a new Speed coming. Wouldn’t make sense though.

Here some more explanations about the Sonic 3 and how it fits in the range:
https://flysurfer.com/2020/02/the-sonic-in-depth-guide/

The first Sonic FR was our racing and bigair machine. But as Racing become more specialized we need to make a pure and only high level race kite and the Sonic Race was born and was registered for IKA races like world championships.
The Sonic VMG was the successor. But as IKA chaotic shortly changed there rules and we could not register it as planed.
So we have now the Sonic Race (IKA registered) and the VMG for all opend races.

Cheers, Armin.

I like this diagram from Flysurfer. Helps make sense of the line.

The Speed 4 deluxe 8/10m is much closer to the Psycho 4, it is basically a Psycho 5. The Speed 3 and Speed 4 lotus are very similar kites, the Speed 4 is obviously better. The Psycho 4 is the most unique of them all. It's loose tips got toned down on the Speed 4 deluxe. I have to say that is what makes the Psycho 4 drift so well. Like the Peaks TE flaps, the Pyscho4s tips flap or collapse and so drift back into the window. The way it curls up is of benefit too.

So, once IKA registers VMG it would pretty much retire the Sonic Race or there's no way to register VMG under current rules?
What does "VMG" stand for?
