Fastest turning foil kites

Postby airsail » Thu Apr 23, 2020 8:47 pm

Hi All, I’m progressing into tacks on a medium size wing, about 600 sqcm and finding my 12 mtr Soul not really up to the task in the 7-10 knot range. Just doesn’t have the power out of the tack and I’m getting touchdowns. So I guess I need a bigger kite.
A 15 Soul is going to be big and slow, a Sonic 3 is probably the pick but my funds just don’t stretch that far. What larger foil kites are available secondhand in a 15 mtr size with a good turning speed?

Why don't you make a kiteloop out of tack? When I am tacking on hard surface I almost always make a kiteloop, that also removes twist out of lines and gives that additional pull when it is needed.

I think every 15m foil kite is slow. So perhaps best to concentrate on better technique or to use more efficient kite, not bigger. However options are not than many in 10-12m sizes, perhaps some race kite would do.

Have you considered the Ozone Chrono V3 Ultralight?

What’s your weight?
My 12 Soul is doing fine in 7-10kts, even better after a long mixer test.. I’m 72kg.
I’m on -3M lines, I like the faster steering.
Did you check the trim / long mixer?

I just got a Pansh A15. It's a good kite and very cheap.

Foiling tacks are all about kite power, efficiency and speed.

Underpowered tacking is the hardest thing in existence on a Kitefoil, even the best struggle at it and for them a 21m in those wind speeds is already on the light side.

Get a second hand 18m race kite if foiling tacks are your thing on a small/medium wing for 7-10kn.

I’m 80 kgs and the Soul is fairly new. I’m not keen on a kite look as it just drags you downwind, I do loop when using my smaller kites on a surf foil.
Tried Pansh kites, like stepping back to Speed 2 days, a very basic bridle design and performance.
I’m a bit of a Flysurfer fan, still can’t understand why ozone doesn’t have an adjustable bridle.
Thanks Evan, yes, you need a lot of power, I guess with enough power turning speed is less important as your not looping the kite. The goal is a race tack, that is a foot switch during the tack with no kite loop.

Airsail I am in a similar situation, but I am mostly landing my tacks now from about 8kn up on my R1v2 17m (on Duotone Daytona). My problem is under 8kn things get really tricky with race kites. But to answer your question there is no way I could tack in 7-10kn with a 12m Soul. I recently sold a 12m Hyperlink I was learning racing on and trust me the difference between trying to tack a 12 mid AR kite and a 17m race kite in 7-10kn is enormous, the bigger higher AR kite is so much easier as its provides so much more lift. RE the Pansh kites, which one did you try? My experience is that the Aurora has stability issues, the Genesis is a pig (better with mixer mod) and the A15 seems great, I have one on the way, however I have noted that the Aurora and Genesis both have terrible lift when tacking. The Aurora in particular seems to die when the lines cross so I find it impossible to tack. I'll report back on tacking the A15 when I get it - its 15m but I am considering buying an 18m for winter.

so why you don't just get a bigger wing - problem solved! And most likely easier and much cheaper solution than buying a new kite.

Dear all,

I wonder if a Peak 13 could be a solution. It is said to be good turning kite, and should be ok down to 6 knots. Just asking, because I also sometimes struggle with a Soul 12 - I don't consider it an easy kite for beginners on a foil.

Thanks - Tom
