Do Peak4 kites work with waveboards?

Postby Peter_Frank » Fri May 01, 2020 7:39 am

Or are our LEIs superior for riding waves DTL?

And can the fabric take this much higher load, especially when going upwind again outside?

Since it is originally designed for moutains where the loading is very high when loop-climbing the slope, it should withstand a lot of loads . Peak v1 and v2 where robust in time with snow kites.
Imo the flapping is the main source of wear while you should have less flapping on a surfboard, non ?

I am not totally convinced with single skins on surfboards. Their lack of performance is ok on an hydrofoil but it is a bit too painful on a strapless surfboard, although they are great in the surf. Waves have more wind range, are easier to deal with upwind, more linear, etc ...but less drift than single skins (because of drag). With the single skins, you have to be exactly in the wind range otherwise they are tiring in all other areas than surfing the wave. Overall, I prefer to keep with waves (4.5/8.5/12.5) and surfboards.

This said Benoit Tremblay is working on a Firefly V2 (with an update for V1 owners) and he said he succeeded in removing nearly all flapping.

On other peak4 topic I stated that I 110kg plus gear tested peak4 5m with door twintip and I was able to ride to my surprise although losing ground a bit by bit. After peak test I took 15m Sonic2 and smaller tt to have a blast. Wind maybe 12-16kn range.

So Peak did function with more draggy board than hydrofoil so why not waveboard. Lei on the same session were 10-14m.

The best I could achieve on Peak 4 11 was staying even. But I could not get upwind enough to ride wave downwind.

On marabou 6 I was able to ride an Alaia type board upwind in 20 knots on flat shallow water. But I don’t know if I could keep upwind with waves and current.

Hmmm, yes true if upwind is an issue it is a problem...

I dislike the square short boards that goes upwind like a raceboard almost, and like the more classic wave shapes that goes slowly upwind only, so upwind IS an issue indeed, especially when you also foil, you feel like you are wasting a big part of your life going upwind on waveboards :(

But that has to be proved true or not, the upwind ability, later.

What about the DTL riding, has aynone tried it, worse or equal or better than LEI's???

Of course, like everything else, one has to get used to it, so just doing it one time might not say anything.

As far as I know, Steph was able to ride with his surf strapless with the Conceptpair FireFly; so, the peak having a better upwind, this should be feasible

I had my 5 meter peak 4 out in somewhere around 21-24 knots on 20 meter lines with my old Slingshot Space pickle.

It worked awesome.

No problems getting upwind. I was able to go anywhere I wanted in waist to chest-high mushy shore break.

I can see the peak being a problem on a twintip or a smaller heavily rockered surfboard. But it is totally worth trying.
