9m Soul Opinions

Postby RomeUtah » Wed Jun 24, 2020 11:16 pm

Looking for a 1 kite travel quiver, traveling with surfboard, foil, and maybe tt. What has people's experience been with low end and high end? How has the kite handled in the surf or ocean? I have flown my 15m soul on reservoir and surf and the down loops are comically slow.

I enjoy my 9m Soul when on my foil and 12-14 knots, they have a nice range but hard to think of it as a 1 kite for all winds. For me the 10m is probably my go to if the winds are all over but there are times that require a 15m and the 10m will not do the job.

Perhaps read what ive just posted on the 9m under the Soul heading.
On a TT you can either ride a bigger kite and smaller board Or bigger board and faster turning Smaller kite....
Just get a larger front wing for the foil + some 5m or 10m line extensions and do the PMA camber mod.
Problem solved and a fast turning kite :thumb:

The 9m has the same chord or front to back length of the 10m - giving it a better botom end.

I’m 190 lbs on a 633 wing. The 9m works down to around 10 kts for me but don’t want many lulls coming through at the low end and some looping is required to start at times. Can ride it into the high teens on the foil, but a smaller wing (and straps?) would let you go even higher, or your surfboard/TT. Haven’t used in large surf/waves, but fine in rollers on the Great Lakes. Line extensions would help per above post if you are trying to get more out of one kite. Also depends on riding style and how powered up you like to be - I fall into the “less is more” category and prefer a faster turning smaller kite when possible.

I am 90 kg. 9m Soul low end is 8-9 knots on a 1300 surf wing but probably 10 knots where the fun really starts. I dont do surfing really but generaly you can compare it to a 11-12 tube in power and turning. Same for twintip it could start somwhere 15-16-17 knots I guess, but the top end for me is 35-38 knots (around 70 km/h) but that wind should be constant not some super gusty turbulent wind. Gusty wind is doable if you are experienced with foil kites but it won't be that fun.

You should consider the ozone hyperlink v2 9m. It's less " racy " than soul.

Next time we're having a session together I'll trade you my 9m soul for your HL v2 so we can really explore the differences.

thats nuts :o
no chance in hell I could or would have the nerve to even launch my 9mtrs foils in that much wind, defo 5mtr foil kite conditions, or switch to a 3 strut lei to be honest.
crazy to put up a 9 mtr foil in 38 knts
that's the same as putting up a 11mtr lei in 45mph winds, maybe a few top guys at king of the air would do it, but for average joe and jane reading this then no no no!

I do know some who own the 9mtr soul, who have said "why would you want anything larger?"
I tend to weigh in favour of this thought,
I have an 11mtr super light chrono v3 and two top brand 9mtr foi kites,
the 11 comes out errr, to remind me how much fun my 9mtr foils are, :thumb:

I use 10m Speed4 lotus kite as one kite travel quiver for heavy rider, and have used it a lot with hydrofoil too. Packs down small and is light, great wind range, and even on non-kiteable ultra low winds it can be used as stunt kite because it still flies in a puff.

So based on my experience with Lotus-10, one kite quiver with Soul 9m, why not. Maybe not optimum for everything but big TT jumps on wind and still works nice with hydrofoil and also it should drift on surfboard. Perhaps you could play with front-backline lenghts to gain different characteristics, like for surfing gaining backstall to move kite around also by reversing etc.
