Pansh A-15 ultralight, add a Blow-Out valve

Postby Bille » Sat Jul 04, 2020 8:20 pm

My 15m, A-15 ultralight will not be as strong as my 10m, PL Venom ; so
i am going to add a Blow-Out valve.

It has 33 cells , so the odd one is in the center ; that is where i plan
to sew in 3/8", (9.5mm) wide , (Velcro, the full length of the TE) of
that single cell, with a short 1', (25.4mm) piece of the same width Velcro
added to the center, to keep it from opening, unless it does have an impact
on water or land.

Thoughts on if one cell is enough to accomplish the task ; or maybe
do it to (2) cells , (one on each side of the center one) ?

This is a rather Light kite ; i'd like to add minimal weight , when doing
this Mod.

Never heard of a blowout valve. Is this something older foil kites had?

Billie

My 10m Access has 2 blow out valves which are basically slots about mid chord. The material overlaps but there is no velcro.

Also I have flown flysurfer kites with the deflates open and they were ok and so I would try it without velcro first.

As I write this I also seem to remember that Pansh use TE blow out valves with magnetic closures so have a really good inspection to make sure they are not already there.

( I think it would have to be a very narrow strip of velcro or it will be too strong to be effective, but I am not a foil expert! )

So maybe go with 1/4",(6.35mm) wide Velcro , instead of 3/8" ; and add some to
the center , (only if it's needed) ?

Just looked at, I think, a Russian video and his A15 seemed to have magnetic closures on the trailing edge as well as a zipped deflate and so I would be surprised if you were not already covered.

However if needed, I think 1/4 velcro would be ample but I am sure your judgement on that would be just as good as mine!

Magnetic blow-off valve on trailing edge of Pansh kites is only for standard cloth in my memory, not Ultralight .

My G5 came with the magnetic blow valve on the trailing edge. One in the center.

I can understand the need for a blowout valve in a 10m venom, as it’s a fast flying high wind kite.
But would a slow flying, slow turning low wind kite ever hit the water with that much force that it could blow the internal structure?

You are not slow on a hydrofoil in low wind.

Good question Andrew ! :thumb:

Here's my take :
A month ago, i was teaching a hang glider buddy , about kiteboarding
in the park, with my 10m PL Venom . The wind was light enough that' we
had to run to get it up and flying ; but he still managed to Hammer the kite
5 times , and one of them started from near zenith, which resulted in the
valve opening.
Now imagine how hard that 15m , A-15 is gonna hit the water , when i
start learning to hydrofoil with 27m lines, in 10 kt wind ? I believe it could explode
and a few hours of work, putting in a blow-out valve ; may be worth my time ?
