Flysurfer Soul 12m or 15m

Postby Finfo » Wed Aug 19, 2020 2:50 pm

Hi,

I've just started hydrofoiling, progressing slowly but surely. My intention is to go hydrofoiling on winds ranging from 8-14knots. My weight is 85kg and the foil wing is 1500cm2 (Gong allvator M).

I'm looking to get flysurfer soul for especially to use with hydrofoil, but also for twintip occasionally when the wind picks up as I understand its also good for lofty jumps etc. With my weight and the foil wing I use, should I get the 12m or 15m for the wind range of 8-14knots? Appreciate your advice, thanks!

A lot of people love the 12m and 15m, but I would not personally go bigger than 10m.

I used to have the 10m as my light wind kite and now have the 9m as I prefer to ride underpowered on the foilboard. I am 90kg. In the UK, so the air is generally colder (more punchy) although this year has been hot. I am on the Moses 633 which gets going super early and definitely helps with the lower end.

The 10m would definitely be fine in 8kts and is much livelier than the bigger kites. I am not really sure how much more you would get on the bottom end with the 12 or 15 but they would definitely turn into a handful much earlier than the 10m.

Each to their own though and I am sure that others may recommend the bigger ones for that range.

I’ve got 6, 10 and 12.
I agree with Joe, for foiling in 8-14kts and your big wing a 10 is all you need. At 14 kts I take the 6m..
You would love the 10 in 20+ kts on your TT..

I have a 10m Soul that I *can* use down to 8-9 knots, but it's more fun in the 12-17 knot range. I just ordered a 13m Sonic for the 8-14 knot range so that I don't feel so underpowered at the bottom end of the wind range.

I am apparently the last hydrofoiler around who likes to ride powered and go fast, though, everyone else seems to want to be as underpowered as possible.

You could use either of those kites in that wind range depending on how powered you want to be.

Line length is also a factor, the 10 Soul on longer lines is possibly a better light wind option than the 12 or 15, but then you also need room to launch and land with longer lines.
Two of us, similar weight and wing size, myself on a 15 Soul, 15 mtr lines, mate on his 10 Soul, 20 mtr lines. Very light wind, maybe 6-7 knots. Both of us could get going but the 15 was a bit of a truck, slow turning etc and the 10 looked like more fun.
But, as the wind gets stronger the 15 has great lift for tacks etc without having to rely on a kite loop to get out of it. Depending on what riding style you prefer, the 12 may be a good go to option.

you can use any kite from 7 to 18 in that range for foiling but on TT you will appreciate the size..
My go to summer kite is 15 soul.. I use it from 7 to 22 kts..
I can comfortably foil on it till about 15kts..
big airs start at 10kts
After 15 kts - TT airstyle..

Nice Deniska!

don't forget the important factor of frontwing size..
Finfo got a 1500cm2 frontwing.. not a small one..

Wow, haven’t seen a jump on a foilboard that high!

Thanks for the replies! I'm leaning towards getting the 12m based on the replies and then maybe 15/20 lines could work to adjust when it is in the optimal/low end of the wind range?
The 10m could be too small as I like to ride powered (at least on TT and strapless SB) also my intention is to use the soul mostly at or below 10knots. For that 15m could be good too but bit concerned if it would be too heavy to turn for my taste and if people are using 10m in those conditions, I guess 12 would do. Nice jumps on the 15! :D

That is a good choice, the 12m is great for 6-15kts and at 15kts you can take your twintip.
I fly the 12m without line extensions, much better response.
For (strapless) SB I think the turning speed of the bigger foils is way too slow.. I think tubes are a better choice for that.. anyway soon you will start to surf the waves with your foil.. and you will start thinking of Peak4's.. 8)
