crack in chicken loop - problem?

Postby Gyre » Tue Nov 17, 2020 3:57 pm

Flysurfer bar... the plastic tubing on my chicken loop has a crack in it, probably just from cold & wear. The bar isn't too old and the rope inside the chicken loops seems fine. Do I need to do anything or can I ignore this? Is this even fixable without replacing the entire chicken loop?

Sand gets inside and it starts wearing out more.
Duct tape would be my quick fix :)

I've had this a number of times with different bars. If the rope still looks Ok then I think there is no reason to assume it isn't, though I wouldn't just "ignore" it (keep on checking). Ducttape is probably a good idea. In my case the rest of the plastic always goes quite quickly once it starts. As soon as you have just rope on your harness hook it wears very fast - you need that plastic. I've been able to replace the plastic but if you have access to these things, it might be more practical to get a new chickenloop. In which case you might as well start looking I guess. This is my personal experience, others might feel different.

That one might be ok I would squirt some glue on there to keep the sand out or just tape it. You need tubing like said above because if the rope contacts the spreader hook it wears out immediately but that's a bit above it should be ok

Sand will already be in there and sitting at the bottom of the loop, slowly eating away at the pressure points low down in the loop. Just where you can't inspect for wear😕
Time to dump the old one and replace, the sooner the better if your into mega loops👍
