Advice For Boosting Large Foil Kite with Twin Tip

Postby Steve271 » Sun Nov 29, 2020 5:38 pm

Boosting technique for 18m Soul on water with Large TT Door (Lightwave Wing 165)?
Hi guys, another question from a relatively newer (and lighter 75kg) rider.
I understand most of this will come with time under kite and experience but I’d certainly appreciate any advice to boost on such a large slow moving kite?
I love my 18m Soul as a session saver for my TT.
I’m comfortable with basic boosting with tube kites (XR5s) and my 12m soul (although I have yet to nail landings). I haven’t quite figured out the best approach for my 18m Soul yet.
Specifically looking for tips about;
1) how low / high to send it from- before zenith?
2) how to maximize sending speed- whether to climb slowly then snap it?
3) how to minimize being pulled off my edge as it slowly climbs
4) best point to pull the bar- is it worth pulling a little earlier?
5) how much to sheet / feather the bar when flying vs keeping it sheet in?
BTW already have 60cm FS Infinity bar, kite is trimmed to sheet in fully without backstall, on std 20m lines and I have already searched posts on this site and kitesurf forum 🙂. I have not found much advice on this very specific topic.
Any advice would be very welcome- I know I'll figure it out eventually, but would appreciate some help to point me where to focus my efforts.

Normal boosting technique for large kites is to send them slowly up to about 11/1 and then send them hard to 12 as you edge and take off. Sending them slowly helps avoid being pulled off your edge. I don't know if it works for big foil kites though? You probably just have to experiment a bit with it as you're probably riding in light winds that might change the bar sheeting technique a little.

I think one of the flysurfer airstyle riders uses big foil kites in his videos. Have a watch of his vids and see if you can pick up his sheeting cues during his jumps?

You will have a small wind window with an 18m and your weight and that board, @10kts I suggest taking a smaller board and try again.
For a little faster steering and direct feel I suggest to take the line extensions off, I prefer the 12 on shorter lines, try it.

Are you sheeting out slightly after you send it past the zenith? Doing so allows the kite to “speed up” which will increase jump height.

So basically bar in to increase speed of turn, as you past zenith and you start the jump, sheet out. Time it so you are fully sheeted in at top of jump. Then as you start down, sheet out a little while you are directing the kite as necessary and right before touch down, sheet in again to smooth the landing.

Kinda hard to describe. Takes practice to get the timing right.

With the amount of depower you get, you should have no problem riding over powered. Miss my 15 in overpowered conditions, was a blast.

I do not have a Foil Kite.

But from what I see:

Steer up continuesly till about 11:00. bar scheeted in just so much that you keep the Edge.
From 11 till Zenith steer hard, sheet out, carve hard upwind (Loaded pre Hop).
Moment of Take of: sheet in Hard.

So basically opposite of what Adventure Logs explains.
(Personally I would Trust him more than me, as he has got Foilkites.)

Thx Adventure Logs- a follow up
Yes I sheet out after sending
I’m not quite following “ So basically bar in to increase speed of turn...” when does this “bar in” occur- is it part of the normal sending or sheet in for take off, or another movement to speed up the kite?
Would you mind breaking down the bar movements in a little more detail?

Can you make some tutorial showing it please?

I usually do the following,
-sheer out
-start to turn kite
-once kite is at around 11:30/1:30 sheer in and kick board with rear foot
-once I'm starting to decent I'm sheering out again for softer landing

I'm riding Soul 15m with 26m almost every time

The biggest issue with boosting on big foil kites - is keeping the edge while it's climbing to 12..
You can mitigate it with hardware and technique...
definitely consider installing bigger fins.. some people go as far as custom builds
https://www.pbkiteboarding.com/kiteboar ... a-usa.html

using waves as ramps helps tremendously... however if there is any chop I don't even bother with my 15Soul and TT - impossible to speed up and hold the edge... long term you definitely want to switch to hydrofoil.. then any 10kts day will be 30footer day on your 18soul..

Foils are much different than inflatables. It’s not just sheet in and go.

I’ll try to record something but it may be a little while. I’m in the process of moving down to South Padre Island though so I should have much more days on the water soon.

Basically if I can hold the edge, I’ll sheet in while sending the kite to increase the speed of the kite. Gives more pop as well. Then as you start up, sheet out for the extra lift and slowly sheet it so I’m fully in at apex of jump.

Best I can describe right now being up for 30+ hours. I’ll try to get some footage in by next week.

sheeting in will speed the kite up and as far as jumping goes , you can over complicate things -11 o'clock to 1 o'clock and if you are flying a small kite in a higher wind you can 11 o'clock to 2 o'clock dipping it in and then back to 11 o'clock ,this gives ya jump some extra boost -i've done this with my pulse2 6 metre many times and going into 2 o'clock is an option if ya kite is really quick

i learned to jump with fixed bridle blades harnessed in with a roller , like how the buggy riders do it which i think is a great idea because you learn a pure form of jumping , no depower , with blades you have to position the kite right to get the power in the jump , not like cheating depower :D
