Walter proff treatment

Postby JoseTumaco » Tue Feb 16, 2021 3:09 am

I own a very old Hiperlink 12 M foil kite, it flyes quite ok, but sinks when touchs Water,.. ,. I read some People used Fabsil Gold to recover impermeabilization, do you know other brands/products like this? Any sugestions?

Because Fabsil it is not available in América/Colombia.

I doubt it will help much unless you can also make all the seams airtight.

The earlier ozone foilkites just leak a lot of air and water through the seams. My Chrono v1, v2 and R1 v1 all acted like a sponge when touching the water. Even when new and have seen the same thing happen on the hyperlinks so I doubt it has much to do with age if the kite is still flying ok.

I have similar problem with a Pulsion 12 - it seems to get very soggy when it touches the water - so I would like to do the same. I couldn't even find fabsil gold in Sweden let alone in the America (it is made in brexitland).
Regarding waterproofing vs making a kite air tight - there are several comments on the thread above. Many people feel that waterproofing improves these kites even if they are not really more airtight.

Someone on this thread recommended Nikwax Polar proof (for fleece) with good results:

I have bought some of this "nano" stuff to try (but you won't find that outside of Germany): https://www.sail-and-kite.com/english/
It is not the cheapest (the bottles are tiny, but is should easily do a big foil kite) and I have not seen any reviews. I won't be able to try it for several months (winter here). Another brand is Ultramar but that is very expensive I think.

I think that one of the banned forum members trialled thinned silicon sealant and positive results. From memory he thinned a whole tube and sprayed it onto the canopy. I suspect its somewhere on the Pansh threads??

Before I decided life was too short to start reproofing kites I made some notes from others experience the following is what I would have researched if I had decided to pursue it.

Possible coatings: Nikwax Solarproof, 303 Aerospace protecturant, Parashield.

Goo dissolved in toluene or xylene: Shoogoo, Marine GoopE6800.

The goo route, 100ml goo dissolved in 500ml of toluene, spray bottle and respirator. Xylene may be safer than toluene.

Note that the solvents are nasty and you would need to understand the hazards and Cosh requirements etc. The above are just initial notes which require further investigation.

I put nikwax solar proof on my used kite (pulsion, elf joker). Hard to tell the efficiency since none were porus, it is more for prevention in my case . Still have good relauches from water..

Cloth becomes more slippy. So maybe a cons on snow but a pro to untanggle tips during a relaunch

Interesting one. You can get it in a concentrated form too (dilute with 2.5 volumes of water) which is cheaper. Worth a try.

Slippery cloth makes it hard to do simple repairs - the tape does not stick. But if you have material like the lotus fabric on flysurfers which is very water repellant and slippery you have that problem anyway.

Thanks a lot, because I have checked and I can get this product in Colombia, Can you share the the way you put it on the kite?

my "impatient" procedure:
- I clean the kite with fresh water,
- let it dry dry dry
- I clean the ground where I will lay the kite (it will be wet of product at one moment, so no dust)
- I put 2 gloves like for washing dishes
- I put nikwax it in a spray bottle like the non-concentrated nikwax
- lay the kite on the ground, intrados and briddle toward the sky
- I spray Nikwax on one tip on the intrados, on about 60 cm deep
- I overall spread the nikwax with my hands and gloves to homogenize on the whole surface
- I fold the tip on itself (30 cm on 30 cm) ; so Nikwax wet against Nikwax wet
- I put Nikwax again on 60 cm hence 30 cm on the dry extrados that was perviously on the ground, and 30 cm on the next dry intrados that was touching the wet folded intrados
- again and again , 60 cm by 60 cm , up to the middle of the kite
- I do the same on the other side of the kite
- then fold the kite in three as if I would put it in its bag
- press it, shake the cloth , to finish homogenize on the while cloth

- wait for about 10 minutes

- unfold the kite and lay to on the ground
- spread again the exceeding drops with my hand on the other parts of the cloth
- fold it again, press, shake
- unfold
- remove the excess of product and drops with a cloth
- let it dry
