Kite sugestions for foiling in 15 knots

Postby JoseTumaco » Tue Jun 15, 2021 2:43 am

I own a 12m Soul, perfect for my spot at Colombia usualy Between 8 - 10 knots, I foil 1 year ago, with big wing (Moses 679 with 91 carbón mast). But when it gets from 11 to 15 knots (never more here) my Soul 12 M is too much powerfull. I am thinking in buying a new kite, which size/Brand do yo suggest me? A 9 M Soul, a 10 m Airush Ultra or a 8m Peak4? Or other? I just want fun, no race, and there are no waves here. I am 73 kg. Thanks for your help.

interesting..
how is the kiting on the pacific coast of colombia?

i've done lago calima near cali(and cartagena...and san adres) but didnt know of locations south of cali.
...do you guys have a website of locations or kite meetup facebook page or something?

re: your question..
you can use almost anything.
personally...for that wind... i'd get a 4m peak4 and med aspect foil kite..
my preference would be 6m gin spriit or 6m flysurfer soul... but there are a lot a very good kites for that wind range and that foil wing.
fwiw: the 6m soul will fly rather differently (in a good way) than your 12m... imo, the smaller sizes are much better on bigger wings

I love my 9m Boxer. I can get going on my big wing (1250) at 12/13mph, and can easily ride comfortably into the high teens. I also have a 12m Ultra but it feels overpowered by 13/14 mph. Both are excellent foil kites in IMO.

Try halving your line length's on a 12m Soul in 15 knots. You'll be pleasantly surprised!

15 knots = 7m Soul1 or 6m Soul2 with a larger foil. They only get better the smaller they are.

What is fun is the question...on flat water I wouldn't go with a boring Peak. Soul 6/7 would be fine. Or else another option is to get a different hydrofoil wing (smaller)
I have the 15M Soul and love it in 15kts with 637

One of the locals where I kite steps down from his 10m soul to a 7m Chinese Genesis thing for those wind speeds. He seems to like them - though he is very skilled so I doubt he worries about whether it will relaunch. They are certainly very cheap. I gather ownership grants you a window into kite manufacture though as many people seem to need to build their own bridles to get them to work. Cheap though :D

At your weight I think a 10m Ultra will be too big. I'm a little lighter and have a 9m ultra. With a reasonable size wing it will take me as low as 9 knots and starts to get juicy about 17 knots. With a moderate wing (900-1000 cubic cm) I'd be looking for a 7-8m size for average 15 knots.

6m soul would be a good size and be appropriate given you already have the handling skills. A second hand 7m or 8m wave kite might also fit the bill if you don't think you're going to get that much use out of it.

8m Drifter for me at 15 knots, and I'm thinking I might need a 6m for 15 to 20 knots -- I'm not changing from the foil until 18 knots is the low number...

So I think 10m Ultra is too big, unless they're really gutless or your 15 knots is very warm.

For me 15 knots is perfect for my 9M Boxer it's sweet from 8 knots to 20 knots and I can go to 25knots in a pinch. The 7M Boxer work from about 10 knots to 25knots and can hold in 30knots.
