Kitefoil world speed record set on foil kites - Gin Spirit and Flymaax Boom V2

Postby derek440 » Mon Jul 05, 2021 2:36 am

Recently in Europe they had an event including the fastest kitefoil speed run being recorded as the world record (not sure you can use "world" during COVID as mainly locals i would assume) but anyway the fasest runs were recorded and the winner was Thomas Lombardo on a Gin Spirit 8m for the fastest over 500m and same rider over 1 nautical mile on Flymaax (same company/designer) Boom V2 10m. Per the article below both runs were affected by some funky wind, sand-banks etc and the wind was so nasty Thomas went for the Gin Spirit which is incredibly stable and powerful but for the longer run he went for boom. Per the article he was aiming for 38kn over 500 and 36kn over 1nm and went pretty close, great effort considering the conditions. Disclaimer I sell both of these kites (in Australia) but I aslo ride them and they are amazingly good, highly recommend for racing and for freeride, they are the best kites I have ever ridden.

Speed doesn’t seem that fast! Curious about the kites though. Seem to get no publicity at all. No UK dealer though…

From the article it looks like kites have been added to an event that used to be focused on windsurfing speed runs but that's a guess. Thomas was looking to hit 38kn average, keep in mind this is over a fixed course between cameras too, not just a GPS run anywhere you want so its a fixed track and had some offshore wind. Anyway it is a start and I was also interested in the kites and happily surprised that Gin's (very powerful) freeride kite was so quick. Can't wait to see this head towards and past 40kn.
