kite for foiling in 11-15 knots

Postby JoseTumaco » Fri Sep 03, 2021 11:51 pm

I have read a lot of information relative to this question, but need some more help.
I own a 12 m Soul and 12 m Hiperlink (in bad conditions now), also Ozone Enduro 9m for TT.
Soul is great for most of may days in my spot, with 8-10 knots normaly, where I need power to go. But I need a new kit for foiling when the wind is above 11 knots, because Soul gets to "slow" and powerfull. I am 73kg and own 82 and 91 Moses mast, w600, w679, w550.

I am thinking in: a) 9m Ultra b) 6m Peak c) Other one strut or none strut 9 m kit.

What do you think about? Thaks for your commets. :bye:

In my spot there are not waves, and I like freeride. I preffer freeride than race. Just enjoy foiling at my 47

If you like the Soul but the 12m is overpowered why not a Soul 10 or 8m?

Thanks, I really want something not so slow as Soul, why do you prefer Ufo to other kites in foiling? What is the fealing?

If your skills are good enough a 5m peak is the money for that range and a little higher.

If your a little power hungry then the 6m.

A 5 or 6 m2 Peak4 will fit perfectly with your 73 kg and 1000 cm2 wing in 11-15 knots of wind.

Be low cost and turns great, fun.

Do note if you go the way of peaks they barely provide any lift.
They are great for waves, which you mentioned don’t have, and as “stunt kites” (not so much for the larger 6m)
If you want lift for anything they are not great (tacks, jumps etc). Coming from the other extreme end of the spectrum with a very lofty twinskin foil you will be in for a surprise how hard things are without steady lift from a kite supporting you.

From 11 knots and up you have lots of options though, each will have its own trade offs. No struts tend to have limited wind range but something like an UFO is a very playful kite.
Plenty of one struts models available as well.

What's wrong with just using your Enduro? I had a 9 v1 a few years ago and it was a pretty decent kite for foiling in that 11kts+ wind range. Stays in the air without fighting too much, it can relaunch, big flight window, turns well, and you're used to flying it.
Using a kite you already have is always going to be the cheapest option...

Almost any kite will be fine in 11 to 15 knots. As others have said, it really depends on what your performance requirements are and your preferred style of riding?

Fast turning?
Upwind/ downwind performance ?
Lots of lift/ Not much lift?
Easy relaunch?
Low cost ?
Good drift
etc.. etc...

Every kite has compromises, so you need to define what's the most important to you then ask the question again.

If you want to make tacks easy as possible, and also good jumping abilty but you don't mind high cost and slower turning then a twin skin foil kite like Flysurfer Soul, Ozone Hyperlink, Ozone Chrono might be the kite for you.

If you want the best drift and faster tuning and lower cost but don't mind low lift(harder for tacks and bad jumping) and bad relaunch then perhaps a Flysurfer Peak.

If you want decent all-around foiling fun then perhaps a 9m single strut LEI like Ozone Alpha, Naish Boxer, Airush Ultra etc...

If you want a kite that is decent all-around that can also jump well on a twintip (but won't fly in as light wind) then perhaps a 3 strut LEI like Ozone Enduro, Naish Pivot etc....

Personally I think a majority of people would get most enjoyment and convenience from a 9m or 10m Single Strut LEI.
