Using a Wing foil board to learn to Kite foil?

Postby BrianMaiden » Mon Sep 27, 2021 1:44 pm

Is it realistic to use a Wing foil board to learn to Kite foil? I am learning to kite foil currently (not interested in wing foiling) I am being offered a Fanatic sky wing 5.4 at a good price. Any reason why this would be a bad board to learn on? it looks bigger, with more volume than my current board (Duotone Hybrid).

Sure why not. The wing foil wings are huge so you'll want a tiny kite. Wing foiling you start with the board flat and on your knees in kite surfing you tip the board side ways then sine the kite and put pressure on the board. Since the board is bigger it will be a little bit harder to tip that's all. I wouldn't buy it unless you want to wing since you'll have to sell it later when you get better and want a proper hydrofoil kite board

Do you think i'd learn faster on a wing foil board than a regular kite foil board?

No. A wingboard will be much harder to waterstart since it’s so buoyant you won’t be able to handle it easily one handed while holding the kite bar.

I’m thinking of using a wingfoil board for kitefoiling, so that if I have issues (wind dies, equipment failure) I can paddle in rather than swim in. This might open up some places to ride that are a little farther from my starting point. Has anyone else done this (aside from the guy on YouTube using a Fanatic Sky 5’4” and a big Peak4)? I’m curious how much volume relative to rider weight would allow for decent paddling without being annoyingly large while riding. If anyone has experience, please share. Thanks.

For sure you can.
I did it. 65kg and used a 75 L board.

Waterstart as with a usual kitefoil board.

I still use it with unsteady and light winds, when swimming is common. Paddle with such volume is easy and effortles. And during lulls I can stay on the board looping the kite waiting for a gust to go on again.

Only issue is very heavy to carry it walking....

Worth if found at a good price

Agree, you will learn slower - very difficult to handle the start, and if also using a wingfoil foilwing, it will be so big that you will shoot up out of the water with no control - much more difficult when new and you have to use a powered kite.

Big wide boards are awesome in marginal winds yes, but not for beginners - and IMO most wingfoilboards are simply too big...

Have ridden my wingfoilboards with a kite, and have really big marginal wind boards myself - but still smaller than the wingfoilboard.

So yes it is possible, but not a good idea for learning, and when you dont wanna wingfoil, I would not waste time with this - just get a normal semibig kitefoil board, and you seem to have one?

Your Duotone Hybrid is perfect for leaning, some length, some volume, but more narrow and thin - so super easy to handle :thumb:

Well , I forgot to mention that I do not use a Big wingfoil. I use a 1200cm foil that is quite common.
I do not know why but I had found no difficult to water start.
But I had learnt in a inland lake with light and gusty winds ....so that big board has helped me a lot. symply with it I have spent more hours foiling than with a kitefoil board (of course IMO)

So better wait for more user reviews

I dont understand this reply?

The thread is about someone who want to learn to foil, asking if it is easy on a big wingfoilboard.

It is not....

Whereas if you have learned and CAN foil, you can use these boards with good success for many reasons.

Sorry Peter, will try to explain better, (not easy with my limited english)

I replied your post because although I used a wingboard to learn kite-foil,is important to mention it was with a small foil (and you mentioned that a big foil-wing would shot up out the water)

never was interested to wing, so i do not know how a big wing-foil behaves kiting, sure you are right. But in my experience a 75L wing board is easy to waterstart (I learnt with it to kitefoil and still use it)

Maybe my experience is related to the crappy winds I have to kite in :-?
