I own a 13m Ozone Chrono V4. The kite is fantastic for low wind hydrofoiling down to about 6knots.... I enjoy being powered, riding fast and jumping.
From 6 to 10knots I can ride on the 13m but I'm not particularly powered for big jumps until the wind gets above 10knot.
I'm considering buying a 18m kite (Either Chrono V3/V4 or R1 V3/V4) for "freerace" style of riding and freeride jumping in 5knots to 10knots.. I won't be racing in competitions.
Can someone tell me if there is a significant difference between the 18m Chrono and 18m R1 (V3/V4) for low wind hydrofoiling? I'm aware that the R1 bridles will require more maintenance than Chrono bridles to keep them in tune.... but will the R1 be significantly less stable than the Chrono and more difficult to fly? Any other disadvantages of the R1 (apart from the higher price) ?
Also, I would intend to fly the kite on 20m+ lines... I know the R1 is designed for shorter lines.. will the R1 fly badly on 20m+ lines?

I have 17m R1 v2. great kite. even on 18m lines.
Have 13m Chrono v2 as well. I dont think for free ride its difficult at all.
But, I got both cheap.

I have both Chrono V1’s and the R1 V1 (15m) and haven't noticed that much difference between them in terms of flying characteristics.
The R1 has had far more use this year as compared with 18m Chrono and is fast becoming my favourite kite.
In terms of bridle maintenance, other than replacing the pulley lines PB1/PB2 I’ve not had the need to do anything with the main bridles.
You may find the 15m to be enough for light winds.

Based on what your looking for, something to look into may be the Flymaax Toon/Instinct. It's being marketed specifically as a Free Race kite.

I recently got the 18m for lightwind snowkiting (I'm using 21m lines). Haven't tried it on water yet but folks I've talked to say it combines the BigAir/stability of the Gin Spirit with more of the speed and upwind angle of the Boom V2.

I was riding 15m R1v3 last year and this year got a 15m Gin Spirit and I hardly use the R1 any more so I sold it, the Spirit is just more fun and reliable for free-ride/free-race. The R1 is pretty easy to use but you do have the odd issue when you over-fly it or put it in the water or the wind drops. With all race kites there is a durability issue (and then tuning issue), they just push the envelope a long way in terms of trading weight for durability. Having said that R1's are pretty reliable but a good idea to have spares and know how to splice and how to tune. I recenlty got that 18m nate76 mentioned the Instinct and its definitely a good thing for boosting in sub 10kn, probably the most powerful kite I've ever used and well impeccable manners too, a nice combination.

I've never seen Gin or Flymax kites in the UK. Also never seen any UK shops or online shops selling them.
Does anyone know where these can be purchased in UK?

looks like there is no UK dealer, you might have to use an EU shop, there is a where to buy secion on the website. Or ask your local kite shop to try them and maybe stock them
