Wich rope for 828 cleat?

Postby bitxopalo » Thu Jan 06, 2022 1:08 am

I am building a new bar for HF.
And I want to use the small CL828-68 cleat.

I dont know how to mount the rope (4mm). On the biggest 826 cleat the rope pass twice for the holes.
The 828 instead, has very tiny holes and can not pass twice for them ...and from the QR outs two rope.

Can anybody share a picture of this mounting problem solved?

Thanks

I have a bar with this cleat. Used 4mm or 1/8” can’t remember which.
Not at home so can’t post a picture.

Also built a bar with next size up using 6mm line snd I like that better - a lot easier to hang onto.

I had the same issue as you, dont have a picture, but I simply tied a knot just below the cleat where the two lines end and only one continue, and added a stopperball here (or not).

Then you only have to go through the 828 one time.

Now I have removed this "double line" on this QR, and on all other bars I just use one line from the QR and through the cleat.

Eventhough I use 5 mm rope instead of 4 because it fits so perfectly in the cleat teeth, and a nice bigger size for lasting (wear when through the bar hole).
A bit difficult to pass through the aero cleat holes because it is most likely thicker if you burn the end, but possible - and you only have to do it once :naughty:
I think it is 5 mm Liros Magic Edge (Dyneema with Polyester coating), the line - but not sure....

To avoid it slipping through the cleat teeth I simply make an overhand loop, which is easy to grab when you have to adjust trim.
You can just make it really long for starters, and cut it down or not when you know how long it needs to be (for depowering).

For others - we are talking about this cleat, the CL828-68 Aero cleat in AN:

The next size cleat, the CL826 is way too big and heavy and clumsy for hydrofoiling IMO, but fine for "old boards"

On our bars we use a 3mm fitted snug into a 5x3mm pu tube (in such way the pu tube wears away before the rope inside gets damaged) for those that want reduced drag and weigh. This still fits through this micro cleat so you can put it anywhere on the depower cord.

Double line would be max 3-3.5mm, spliced or side by side. Anything bigger won't fit. So try to protect the thin depower cord, change it more often or try to connect a thick rope to one that does fit through the tiny cleat.

Thanks for the useful info.
I will try double rope, cos I use a sliding stopped wich needs it.

Is very useful on light winds to keep the bar sheeted in.

Not sure I understand the problem but if you are using twin lines from the chickenloop why not finish them in spliced loops. Then attach whatever single line you want for cleat with the loops via another spliced loop. I have been using southern ropes 12 strand and found that holds well enough in this type of cleat. If you want to avoid a bury running through the bar fairlead and cleat aerobase you could consider replacing the loops with interlaced figs of 8. If using knots I would reduce their tangle potential by wrapping in tape.

PS one day I will get round to assessing if a bungee insert makes the line hold better in the cleat………….

I understand your solution, for sure it will work, but the idea of using this small cleat is a clean and minimal mount...

Don't forget that the mini cleat is about half the size of the standard ones, that makes things a bit more complicated when you want it strong, wear resistant and clean.

Yep but you can’t have everything. Personally I can’t envisage a neater solution than a single 3 loop handshake knot just below the aerobase, if you are going to retain a twin line stopper ball in the bar throw. Hopefully I am missing something because it is not clear to me why scale matters. No matter, perhaps a picture of the final solution will be the revelation!

i always use double braided sailing rope - i use it for my depower rope , and i use it for when i use handles on a fixed bridle , flexifoil blades for the pully line between the handles to use in a roller, it is cheap and very strong , and i have never ever had a problem - my thoughts on kiting ropes are you can pay alot more , but i have been using this rope ,either 6mm, or 8mm since 2003, and it does the job, i've hung off it many times, very safe
