Flysurfer Sonic 3 falling out of sky

Postby keegster17 » Mon Jul 25, 2022 2:59 pm

Hi guys I have seen there is a lot of conversations on the Sonic 3 these days. I have own the Sonic 3 13m, for 6 months, great kite, only used it 15-20 sessions, due to living where I do. From memory kite flew well in the beginning, but most recently, I have had a lot of swims. I have inspected the kite, looked for knots at bridle, filled with air to view its shape, but the problem is, it will randomly fall out of the sky, as if the safety was pulled, or someone shot it out of the sky with a gun. Its very strange. It launches and will fly fine, but this weekend I had 3 kiters on land and one on the water watch my kite fall out of the sky. I am no pro kiter, but I have kited 8 years, never had issue with wing tip collapsing on this kite like others do with Sonic, but this just drops out of the sky. The kiters actually said, that kite seems dangerous. I want some opinions on what this could be, I have to reach out to Flysurfer as well. I am going to have another kiter inspect and fly it, in case it's something I do, but I have kited enough, to know something is wrong with this kite. It just crumbles, as if the kite starves air all of a sudden. I do like my Flysurfer kites, I am only posting to share my experience so I can resolve the issue.

That's very strange, a kite doesn't suddenly just start doing that. Have you done a mixer and bar test? That's step #1. Any videos of the kite doing this? It's hard to picture in my mind what's happening.

Hi Adventure Logs, yes mixer test done, tried two different bars. Just imagine kiting up or down wind, kite flies fine, turn around start to tack back, and kite just crumbles, its very strange, no tips collapsing first, just crumbles. I have no video, but it would be nice if I did. Seems to be when less powered than when powered. Has not happened while jumping, I know this kite likes tension on the lines, but it should not do what it is doing, is it something internal?

Check all bridle lines VERY Carefully. Every time I've had an issue with my Sonic 2 or 3's collapsing this was the issue. The bridle tangles were not noticeable.

You did the long or short mixer test?

Is it a front stall like this?

Hi Breze, kind of looked like that, I think only reason it looks different is my kite seems to be at 11 and 1 when it happens, and this kite is moving faster. So what is this explanation?

Watch the clip in slow motion, you can see the collapse starts in the center of the LE.
Here the explanation of Benni Bölli, of what causes a front stall
@ min 43

It would be helpfull to know where the collapse starts.
Then tune the profile esp in this part

So did you resolve this issue with your kite, assuming this is you in the video?

Wasn't me in the video .It's a perfect example for a center collapse .I had to tune a lot of foils from friends and my own.
