Checking in on the new Hybrid. Anyone switch over to Hybrids recently from Peaks? I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a 5.5m Hybrid soon to see if they are for me.

What do you seek, aim for?

It is two completely different kites - have ridden both in different sizes.

Well, I love my Peaks but would like to have water relaunch as backup in case I crash the kite. So I'm seeking Peak like traits with a water relaunchability option...

If you want a Peak with better relaunch look at the Sky Country Hysper. The FS Hybrid is a very different kite IMO.

If you like the Peaks for the fantastic floating drift while you ride waves/chop/swell downwind you'll love the Hybrid. I haven't used the Hybrid 5.5m but I have used the 3.5m and 2.5m Hybrids along with similar sized Peak5 kites in a wide range of conditions. They have less raw power than the Peaks but after comparing the 2.5m Hybrid with the 2.5m Peak5 recently I'd say the Hybrids have more top end range and are easier to use in high winds as the softer feel absorbs gusts. And of course the Hybrid relaunch is very easy, though I've been very successful launching the Peak5's too.

I have been able to use the 2.5m Hybrid and 2.5m Peak5 in winds from 15 knots on 21m lines with my 67kg. It's harder to get out of the water with the Hybrid in light winds but once I'm on the foil they are similar with the Peak having a small power advantage in lighter winds. I'm mainly using a High Aspect SABfoil 800 which is 840 sq cm on a 91cm mast. This foil is low drag and pumps well which goes well with both of the kites.

If you're heavier than me and kite in light winds then the 5.5m Hybrid would be a good kite to start with. I haven't used anything larger than a 4m Peak5 this Spring/summer :D It's amazing how small you can go with these kites.

I'd look at the Marabou2 thread.

Today i had my first ride with my new 3.5m hybrid in 25-30 knots.
I really like it, I could not outrun it while going downwind.
I am now curious how it will perform on the low-end.

I agree that the hybrid is a different kite compared to the Peak5 4m. Although different, I think the Hybrid 3.5m is awesome (I did not pinwheel the peak).

I flew the kite with 17m lines but I will try 19m lines next time.

I was absolutely pummelled by a big wave on the reef at Cabarete today. I was in the water waiting to water start when the wave reared up behind and landed right on top of me, throwing me violently backwards & spinning me around underwater. When I came back to the surface my Peak 5m was down and my board had been carried 80 metres away by the wave. I'm very dubious the Hybrid would have been relaunchable after that ... and quite possibly not a tube kite either. One good thing about the Peaks is when they get trashed by a wave they tend not to pull you much, something that can be quite scary with an LEI.

I was able to drift out of the impact zone, wind up my lines and enjoy a 45 minute swim/drift to shore. Fortunately, I was wearing a full PFD which makes carrying a waterlogged Peak no big deal. ... and my foil board arrived safely onshore. :thumb:

True, many kites would not stand for that beating in the waves, and maybe not relaunchable.

BUT, you should not underestimate how crazy the Hybrid just "jumps" out of the water or ground, almost by itself - so maybe it could have saved you, I dont know.

Maybe some with a small Hybrid can confirm (or the opposite) this is true?

I found it almost impossible to keep it "down"

Use Peaks myself for my conditions, but still, in terms of fast relaunch no other kite comes close to the Hybrid I am pretty sure.

It is hard to know. This was my 13th day foiling in the waves without dropping my Peaks, but the waves were much bigger yesterday and this breaking wave caught me by surprise. In this case, the wave pushed me violently forward (and spun me around underwater) so the lines slacked completely and for a few seconds I didn't know which way was up. I've been trashed by waves like that with my wave kites on a SB and had the kite invert and/or the bridle lines wrapped around a wing tip ... also a problem. Without the breaking waves I don't feel too concerned about dropping a Peak .. although it does still happen on occasion. I'm glad I was wearing the PFD, because without it it would have been a very arduous swim in and there was absolutely no hope of catching up with my board.
