Flysurfer bars safety line

Postby keegster17 » Wed Oct 05, 2022 1:56 pm

Hi Foil kiters, Flysurfer now with some if not all of their bars they provide a additional safety line, I just changed mine out, as i had to change some other stuff on my bar and the line was looking a little aged, but I am finding that it is quit long in comparison to the original. Actually even the original, I found over time stretched, and I get this extra line which kind of looks weird when packing the kite, and is a bit of a pain, as it hangs when all your other lines are wrapped up. I measured the difference and it is 16cm when bungee portion stretched out. see picture. Is this too long, is this a issue, or it will be fine, but why does this happen, kind of sloppy looking.

If the bar is trimmed in and the trim strap is 160mm long it is just perfect. Joshing aside, in my experience the bungees used to gather up slack line don’t last any longer than the average knicker elastic. You have to have enough slack when trimmed in to cater for trimming all out so that the extra flag line remains unloaded. I normally adjust mine accordingly.

PS with mini 5th it is even more important to get just right. Then if the center lines break you can ride in on the flag line. With single front line you just want it unloaded and neat imho! It is better to be supplied with something a little too long than too short?

Thanks, you said neat, I just worry with this slack it may grab somewhere, and my safety may not work properly one time?

I agree that it likes to loop itself around adjacent lines which makes it look dodgy if it has slack but if you give it a tug it usually sort’s itself. Can’t say I have had actual problems with it, but I don’t flag that much. Often I don’t bother to splice flag lines I just larks head plus stopper knot them to the flag ring. If there is not much excess I would probably daisy chain it after the stopper knot rather than cut it.

Just check you bar fly lines are as you want them and fly the kite trimmed all out, if you can pull more than 40mm of slack in the flag line you might want to adjust the length!

I have the same thing (not as pronounced though) with a brand new bar.
Keep questioning myself if I should shorten it..
What I find more annoying is the small hole that line runs through..
Half of the time when I need to reset the bar after a flagout, I have to apply significant force to pull the line back (as it catches some sand, etc)..
Would it kill them to make the hole bigger?

Lines don't stretch, they shrink.

So it's normal for the new line to be longer, as it did not shrink like the other lines.

As the safety line is not under load most of the time it shrinks very fast, so should be no problem.
