I have 65 cm for the 15 and 58 for the 8m , it is fine ;
Pressure in the bar of kestrel beeing rather high, you do not necessary need specially thin rear lines, knowing that on top of this the kestrel is really great in medium / high winds since fun and secure, some do not push too faar the line thicknesses

Hi!

May I ask what bars you are using? Not easy to find 65 cm... After only short research though.
Would be 60 cm also ok or will it lack much reactivity?

Thx
Chris

60 cm will do the job for 15m

Kite-attitude bar does both sizes.

Pansh as well but poor quality for the chicken loop.

Hi!

Thanks for the link for the mixer tuning. I stored it as favourite...
I now ordered two flysurfer Infinity XX bars from Kite-Elements. Each for 300,- € in "like new" condition. One in size M (43 - 50 cm) and one in L (53 - 60 cm).
Kite-Elements is the official used and test gear dealer for Flysurfer and I made good experience when I bought my 10m Speed 4 years ago. So when they say condition like new you can trust them.
And I thought 300,- is not too bad for the bars from dealer instead buying from private where you not really know what you get...

Edit: I forgot to write some words about order and shipping. I Ordered on 27th of January in the evening (Germany) with FedEx shipment. The pack was ready for delivery to my home on I think it was 6th of February but I ordered FedEx to deliver on Friday the 9th because I was out for work for the week and didn't want the pack to lie in the stairwell for too long. So in all it would have been ten days for delivery.

Now waiting for a weekend with good weather...

Chris

Today I took the time to unfold both kites. We have a large room (drying room for laundry) in the basement of our apartment complex where I can even spread out the 15m until maybe the last 50-60 cm...
Checked the mixer... B was too short on all four bridles. But be it. It's easy to fix.
Question for packing the kites: from my Speed 4 I am used to fold them half from tip to tip and then roll them from the tips to the middle to squeeze the air out. Then fold the roll two times to pack them into the bag. Is it a good way with the Kestrel too or should I use a different technique (may because of the battens in the LE)?

Cheers
Chris

First impression: Kestrel 8m

Postby mede » Sun Feb 11, 2024 3:35 pm

Yesterday I got my Kestrel 8m (and a Hawk 6m for free with current promotion). Out of the bag, construction looks solid and well executed. I have not yet checked in detail, but it seems that the B Mixer is a bit longer (which would be optimal). I'll check it properly and report.

A quick first impression after flying it on land in 7-18 knts for half an hour today:

Honestly, I'm impressed. @funalex did quite a few things right with this kite :D
  • Launch:
Much less complicated then expected (after all, it's pretty high AR). I launched straight downwind, took it up a few meters, kept it there for a bit with some backline tension and a few quick moves, and that was it. Let's see how it goes when the wind is really strong or turbulent.
  • Bar pressure
Medium. You can feel the kite positioning well, and feedback is well defined.
  • Turning speed
Reactive and crisp (nice!). I'm flying the Kestrel with the Kauper Carbon bar (50cm), which seems to be a good match.
  • Loops
Here I'm really stoked. It's possible to vary the loops (and the resulting power) so nicely. Depending on your input, you can pivot it with very little power output, or loop it through the zone for a nice power spike. What is really cool is the fact that you can almost instantaneously dump excess power even during the loop- the depower works great.
To be checked on the water, but I would expect that this will allow to push things in pretty high winds without a too much of a beating if things go wrong.
  • Depower
Massive. I've rarely seen so much depower accessible within a short stroke.
All in all, a great first impression. Looking forward to trying it out on the water. So far: well done, Alex!

I need your honest assessment : is the kestrel 6m a good option for gusty wind > 20 knots? is it possible to self start / land in such conditions? how is the drift of the kite on a foil ?
I only have a 12m Kestrel, but that one feels really big on foil. I should have bought a 10m for the range I use it in (8..15 knots).

At/from 20 knots I use a Hawk 5m and that one really is a lot of fun in these conditions.
