Easy Pre-inflation ideas

Postby nothing2seehere » Fri Apr 21, 2023 12:21 pm

Was trying to come up with small/light ideas for pre-inflation for light winds (and sometimes stronger winds to get the tips inflated) so as to get max time on the water. My lightwind launch spot has a ground level wind shadow so its common to need to do 3-4 hot launch attempts to get enough inflation to get up. Good for landing though :D

Leaf blowers seem pretty expensive and bulky so not really looking for that. I tried a 12v bilge pump which is fast but bulky (and I accidentally broke my battery so I need to replace that anyway to continue).

Currently trying out a usb PC fan with a powerbank which works but takes 4-5 minutes for a full inflation which is fine as it probably takes nearly that long to run out the lines and detangle the bridles. It all then fits in a small takeaway plastic tray which stows in the top of the sand bag. Cheap enough if someone walks off with the bag.

I tried putting something in the deflate socks to hold them open but it wasn't effective enough and once got caught inside when a freak gust lifted the trailing edge (its a grass launch spot so you bring your own ballast to weigh it down).

Holding the vents into the wind is fine for 14 knots+ but seems pretty ineffective in less due to the wind shadow.

Any other methods that anyone recommends for light wind?

Do a 6 o clock start, it has a name I don’t want to mention. Hot launch.
It’s like a paraglider start, slowly tention the power lines so it build up a wall and auto pre inflate a bit. Send it to 12, ready to go 8)

That's what he does and does not have enough wind for it ;)

I use a bilge-pump too. It's small and I use an electric pump for pumping LEI too, so I have that Battery already... I really see no real alternative to that...

But I have not used it for a long time, as in very low wind I now use Hybrid Kites Hysper 14m, which can be pulled up in "no wind" conditions easy...

I use a DUSTIN MIZER EARTH DUSTER WITH CRANK. I was able to blow up at 12 m Flysurfer Speed 2 in well under a minute. No battery needed. The white tube is removable and you can use it to let the air out of the kite as well. You can blow the kite up with just the hand crank portion without the tube although I find it works better with the tube. I haven't used it in a while as I hydrofoil mainly now and don't find I need to pre-inflate my kites.

That's an interesting idea I hadn't thought of! Very expensive for the exact model here (about the same price as a battery leaf blower) but you can get similar design sold as bbq fans for 1/4 price.

At home when drying kite I use hair dryer with cold airflow connected to mains. Fills up a 15m foilkite quite quickly, in a matter of couple minutes.

There are battery operated hair dryers so maybe it could work. Compact, light weight..

Word of warning on the blower thing

Over inflating isn’t good either, yiu can achieve significantly higher pressure than the kite has in regular flight and you can blow the internet structure

Use em to get them 80% filled puffed up, but don’t go looking for drum tight inflation
