15m Foil... jump height

Postby BillyGoatGruff » Mon Apr 24, 2023 7:05 am

How high approximately could an advanced level rider jump on a 15m foil? Assuming prefect conditions, a kite of the riders choice (Sonic, Chrono, Soul etc) and a twin tip. I previously read of a few on here getting around 16m on Fuysurfer Soul 15m, is this about the peak? I assume with a 15m you reach a limit where you are too overpowered to hold and edge and the slow speed stops you getting much over 16/17m maximum?

I've had a few 15m plus jumps on my 15m Sonic 3 and up to about 14.5 on the 15m Sonic FR. I am 115kg.

You might want to include whether you are riding a twin tip or hydrofoil.

Jamie Overbeek (?) talked about boosting his foil kite overpowered. He used various tricks to get extra height including letting go of the front hand as the kite climbed to increase the trim, sending the kite slowly and jumping before the kite gets to 12. I think I've seen 20m+ from him on a 15m foil kite on Woo in the past.

What wind speed for the 15m jumps?

20-25 knots, I would guess.

I was talking on a twintip, not gone over 15m on a foil I don't think.

The US Gin Kites dealer Captain Kirk's rider Leif Given regularly jumps about 20m on foil kites with TT and I seem to recall one of those was on a 15m and yeah always overpowered, check him out on insta for some foil kite boosting.

Yea, Leif Given has some pretty epic jumps on large foil kites.
I talked to him about it, and he regularly uses the kites above what they are rated for.
Flysurfer kites kept ripping on him, so he switched to gin.

Saw this recently on their insta, 21.7m on Gin 15m Instinct HB:

And from a while back Leif on the Gin Spirit 15m:

I have luck jumping up to 21 meters.

My technique is to ride in gusty conditions say 15 knots gusting to 25 or 30 knots. A steady 25 knots is too much, the 15 will just pull you off your edge. Timing a big gust has been the only way for me to go over 15 meters high with a large kite. I don’t go out overpowered on purpose, I can send it higher on a 12, but sometimes you are already on the water and a gust comes in, you just have to send it.

I use the 15m Gin Instinct with the foil bar. The extra depower on the foil bar is very useful in maintaining control of the kite in gusty conditions.

I would like to hear Jaime Oberbeek and/or Leif Given’s technique.
