Soul 2 15m Low Wind Advice

Postby Kitedougiefresh » Thu Jun 08, 2023 6:42 pm

I had been using a Pulsion 12M as my low wind kite along with a bigger board for days under 10. I am 100KG. Unfortunately, I ended up too far out at sea when a broken line put her in the water, and she now lives in Davey Jones's locker. I got a bro deal from a friend on a 1 time used Soul 2 15 m and bar. The soul is def slower, but she seems to produce a lot more grunt if I kite loop her. However, I have seen several people saw that they don't recommend taking them out in under 10.

I use an Armstrong 2050 currently for low wind, 1050 when there is plenty of wind. I started out on a 2400 and thinking of selling since the 2050 is a bunch faster but I guess if i should keep the 2400 since it appears(haven't' tested but should that it has a little more lift)

I have a Pulsion 18m but do not care for and want to sell cheap.

Anyway, I was hoping to find out what techniques you Soul veterans utilize on low wind days and what is the lowest wind speed you feel comfortable going out in.

Lastly, the FS bar i have can be used at 17meter or with 20meter lines. Any suggestions, and does anyone run longer lines?

TIA for any answers and advice.

I'd be interested to hear more about the pulsion 18 if you're trying to unload it.

I haven't flown my Soul 12 in a while; Currently flying a quiver of Sonic 3's. I would be comfortable down to 7 knots probably the original Soul. I think downloops were probably my go to for low wind Soul flying, whereas backstall water starts are my go to with the Sonics due to high AR. If free-riding and downlooping in light wind are the priority then longer lines are ideal for more pull time/time flying through the power zone.

Armstrong 2050 mostly. Have a 2400 that I started on and just haven't gotten around to selling since I think it maybe has a little more lift and might be a better fit on the lowest of days....

Soul 12 is my most used kite for foiling. At the gusty lake but also used at the sea. I am 75kg with a 1200 frontwing. Use it far below 10 knots. A bit heavier friend of me uses a soul 15 in the same conditions.

When it is constant low wind then a dry soul will stay much longer in the air than you will be able to start flying on your foil even with loops. Except maybe if you were using a really big wing board.

But if it falls into the water you will not be able to relaunch it. There needs to be more wind for a relaunch of the now wet kite or at least a gust. So don't do any stearing mistakes.

But even if you drop the kite it will not sink. I have no idea how your pulsion could sink. Rollup the kite in the water. Pack it on your board and swim home. I often have to do this when the wind is gone.

90kg, 633, Soul 15 5-7 knots. Above use Soul 10.
if the 15 flies, I can foil. If the 10 flies, foiling not guaranteed. Recommend 60cm bar for the 15. makes looping so much easier, never have to grab the lines….

Longer lines and a longer bar will help you get the most out of the Soul 15m bottom end. You are a big boy so a little larger board will help with the planning as well. Looping to start is the key. Not sure how you sunk a kite because of a broken line but my suggestion is to practice recoveries a couple times(with the kite you don't want anymore) so you have it down for when it really happens again.

I was on a minimal board and rough seas and about a mile offshore. No way to pack the kite up and put on board as it has literally almost no volume. It quickly became a sea anchor.

I use a 3' potato chip board. It has no volume. I tried to do so and it sunk the board.

I use the force control bar in the Large size.
